QB Cleveland is a natural leader and competitor

Brenden Cleveland is a quarterback with all the tools to succeed in the game of football. Currently playing in his junior year for the J.L. Ilsley Judges, Cleveland is having an outstanding campaign with over 1000 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air.

Cleveland started playing football seven years ago as a part of the Halifax Argos. The talented young quarterback’s football journey has already seen him win multiple awards, showcasing the impact Cleveland has on whatever team he is playing for.

Cleveland won an offensive MVP award at the Bantam level, and even achieved defensive MVP honours as a member of the Argos. The budding Nova Scotia prospect also won offensive MVP for the Judges last season, an impressive feat for a sophomore to say the least.

Of all the things Cleveland brings to the table as a football player, perhaps the most pivotal is his passion for the game, a love that began very early on in his life.

“I started playing football because ever since I was little I always wanted to be like the professionals,” Cleveland said. “I was always watching them play on TV and then one day my mom signed me up when I was 9 years old.”

When it comes to modelling his game after the pros, Cleveland says that he looks up to Tom Brady because of his intense competitiveness, a quality that Cleveland also brings to an offence.

It is these intangible qualities that make Cleveland the kind of quarterback an offence rallies around and follows into battle. Cleveland understands just how invaluable leadership traits are at the quarterback position, and he embraces the idea of being the guy people count on.

“I like playing quarterback because I like the pressure and leadership,” the Judges standout said. “There’s nothing better than leading your team to victory!”

“I’m trying to improve on leadership for sure because that plays a big role in being a quarterback,” Cleveland added.

As he continued to develop his skills and improve as a quarterback this season, Cleveland has set himself up to have a big campaign next year during his senior season for the Judges.

Cleveland is looking forward to achieving his goals down the road as well, with a focus on his future career and the sport he loves so much.

“My hopes are to play university football, and for school I want to look into a business degree,” Cleveland said.

With his long-held love for football and his natural aptitude for the competitive nature of the sport, Cleveland will only continue to progress as a player as the year’s go on. Cleveland has the determination and attitude to make things happen wherever his football journey takes him after high school.

“I know I can compete at the next level,” Cleveland said. “I love the game of football and I’m really competitive so if the opportunity comes. I’m ready.”

With another year of high school football to go, Cleveland is still just beginning the recruiting process. However, the talented passer has grown up with his sights on a local university program close to his heart.

“I haven’t committed to any schools, but my dream ever since I started playing was to eventually play for Saint Mary’s University!” offered Cleveland.

Wherever his next chapter takes him, Cleveland is sure to make the most of it. Cleveland’s love for the game will ensure he does everything it takes to excel, and with it being such an important part of his life, Cleveland never takes football for granted.

“I honestly have no idea where I’d be without football,” Cleveland said. “I’m very grateful I have the gift and talent to play this game!”
