QSSF football: Interlock football on tap this weekend

MONTREAL – For the ninth consecutive season, teams from the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) will face their brethren from the Maritimes in the annual QUFL – Atlantic University Sport (AUS) inter-league games that will be played this weekend.

QUFL teams have a record of 45-19 in the 64 inter-league games played since 2002. The Laval Rouge et Or and the Montreal Carabins have the most wins against AUS opponents having recorded ten victories in 11 games against the Acadia University Axemen, Mount Allison University Mounties, Saint Mary’s University Huskies and the St. Francis-Xavier X-Men.

“Our conference had just four teams when we began the interlocking schedule between Quebec and the AUS,” said Patricia Demers, director of university sport at the Quebec Student Sport Federation (QSSF). “The interlock has allowed us to consolidate our energies in favour of the development of Canadian university football and we have increased participation by two schools with the addition of Sherbrooke and Montreal to the QUFL.”

She added, “We are pleased to begin a new three-year partnership with the AUS whereby one weekend per season will be reserved for inter-league games.”
In addition to playing four inter-conference games this weekend, the Concordia Stingers will face the McGill Redmen in a battle for bragging rights between Montreal’s two English universities.

From coast-to-coast
The QSSF and AUS are the only two regional associations to play inter-league football games during the regular season and for the second straight year, Radio-Canada will bring the action of QUFL-AUS football into the living rooms of fans from coast-to-coast. This year’s match features the top ranked Laval Rouge et Or travelling to Halifax to face the winless Saint Mary’s University Huskies. The game will also be available live on the internet at [url]www.radio-canada.ca. Both broadcasts begin at 1 pm ET. The last time that these two gridiron squads squared off was in the 2007 Uteck Bowl (Canadian Interuniversity Sport semifinal game) that the Huskies won 24-2.

Inter-league play begins Friday night at 7 pm ET when the Sherbrooke Vert (0-2) & Or host the Mount Alison Mounties (1-0) who enter the game fresh off of a 19-6 upset of the St F-X X-men in their season opener a week ago. The third ranked Montreal Carabins (2-0) host the StFX X-Men (0-1) Saturday at 1 pm, while the Bishop’s Gaiters (1-1) look to build upon their thrilling double-overtime win over McGill last Saturday when they host the no. 10 Acadia Axemen (1-0) who upset the previously ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies 17-7 in the opening game of their season.
The lone all-Quebec game between McGill (0-2) and Concordia (1-1) goes Friday night at 7 pm at Percival Molson Stadium.
