Quarterbacks shine in Huskies exhibition win

While it may have only been an exhibition game, the Saint Mary’s Huskies had a solid effort as the team defeated the visiting Mount Allison Mounties 32-7 at Huskies Stadium in Halifax earlier today.

The Huskies demonstrated their tremendous depth at the quarterback position by playing all four pivots in the game.  Ben Rossong got things going in the beginning for the Huskies.  He connected with Matt Toogood for a four yard touchdown reception.  Moreover, the Bedford, Nova Scotia pivot had three completions in five attempts for 38 passing yards.

Jack Creighton made his return as he relieved Rossong in the exhibition match.  The fifth year pivot from Port Colbourne, Ontario has been out of action since the first game of the 2012 season after he sustained a serious neck injury in the game against the Acadia Axemen.  Creighton had two completions in six attempts for 18 passing yards.

After pivot Drew Jacobson (Brooks, Alta) did a stint on the field, rookie Scott Borden stepped in and connected with Jordan Wallace for a 40 yard touchdown score.  The Halifax, Nova Scotia pivot had five completions in 10 attempts for 82 passing yards in the victory.

Huskies defensive back Kayin Marchand-Wright (Montreal, QC) caught an interception which he returned for a 16 yard major.

At halftime, the Huskies enjoyed a 22-5 lead over the Mounties.

Overall, the Huskies racked up a total of 315 rushing yards and 440 offense yards as opposed to the Mounties 199 yards.  Leading the way was Derek Pisani and Dave Sabourin.  Pisani had 82 rushing yards on 12 carries while Sabourin accumulated 81 rushing yards on 11 carries.

On special teams, rookie Chase Kodejs (Bedford, NS) was successful on three field goal attempts (16, 17 and26 yards).

Donovan Saunders (Hamilton, ON) led the Mounties as he was successful on a 23 yard field goal attempt. The Huskies also conceded two safeties in the game to the Mounties.

The Huskies begin the AUS season as they host the defending conference champions Acadia Axemen on Friday September 6th, 2013 at Huskies Stadium.  Kickoff is 7:00pm.
