During the annual Football Jamboree at Edmonton’s Clarke Stadium, they’ll be selecting the team’s starting and backup pivots for the opening day of the 2010 Prairie Football Conference season on Aug. 21.
The battle is up in the air between Jeremy Long and Clayton Masikewich, who were rookies sharing the duties last season, and Brett Serhyenko, who recently returned from the Victoria Rebels of the British Columbia Football Conference.
“Hopefully, things will work themselves out this weekend and we’ll see who comes to play,” said offensive co-ordinator Rob McNab. “We’ve been watching them pretty heavy these past few weeks and definitely (today) will weigh heavily on who we’ll go into Week 1 with.
“It’s not going to be easy.”
All of them bring something to the table. Masikewich, a second-year Colt who redshirted for the University of Calgary Dinos for two years, is more of drop-back-style quarterback. Meanwhile, Long, a two-time Alberta provincial Tier 2 high school champion with the Notre Dame Pride, and Serhyenko, a three-time Tier 3 provincial champion with the Cochrane Cobras, are more mobile.
McNab added that Justin Fredrich, a second-year player out of Cochrane High School, is also in the mix.
Each player will get a chance to show his stuff in controlled scrimmages against the Edmonton Wildcats and Edmonton Huskies
