Quebec capitalizes on turnovers and specials to thump Ontario East (stats)


Game three of the 2011 Football Canada Cup featured QuΓ©bec and Ontario East. The first quarter was a back and forth battle as the scoring was opened up early at 11:55 of the opening quarter by Quebec with a punt single. Ontario East took the lead late in the first quarter with a 32 yard field-goal. QuΓ©bec closed out the first quarter scoring, replying with a 52-yard pass from Hugo Richard to receiver Γ‰tienne Moisan, moving ahead 8-3 with the help of an extra point convert from Alexandre Huard.

With the score 8-3, Quebec linebacker, Khadim Mbaye recovered a fumble with 6:46 left in the second quarter after QB Nick Gorgichuk was unable to control a high snap that carried him backwards toward his own endzone. Quebec converted on the first player after the turnover with a 9 yard pass from QB Hugo Richard to SΓ©bastien SerrΓ© to make the score 15-3.

At 3:47 of the second quarter Quebec widened their lead after Hugo Richard ran the ball in for a 1 yard score. The touchdown was set-up with a Γ‰tienne Moisan punt return.

A 38-yard interception return late in the second quarter by Ontario East’s Riley Baines brought Ontario East deep into the QuΓ©bec zone. After a previous play touchdown was brought back due to a holding penalty, Team Ontario decreased the deficit 22-7 with a 21 yard connection from QB Nick Gorgichukto a sprawling Jamahll Charles on the last play of the half.

A late QuΓ©bec interception returned for a 45 yard touchdown return by DB, Antoine Roberge off of Ontario East’s Duncan Lurie helped Quebec seal the victory, 42-13. QuΓ©bec will now face B.C. in the second round of games on July 12 at 7 PM (Mountain time).

The third game of the Canada Cup featured two Eastern Canadian teams. The game started as a bit of a see-saw battle, but eventually Quebec’s offense proved to be too much for Ontario East to keep up with. Hugo Richard hooked up with several receivers for deep passes and Gabriel Parent helped balance Quebec’s offence with 77 yards on the ground. The biggest standout for Ontario East was Jamall Charles with 101 yards receiving in a losing cause.
