KINGSTON, Ont. (October 29, 2011) – The No. 8 Queen’s Gaels advanced to the OUA semifinal with a 14-10 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday at Richardson Stadium.

CIS leading rusher Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., scored the game winning touchdown on a one-yard rush early in the fourth quarter to give the Gaels a 14-7 lead at the time.

Up until the Granberg touchdown the Gaels had trailed the entire game and all points were posted by the team’s two kickers.

Both defences stymied each other’s offence with the Gaels managing only 379 yards offence while the Golden Hawks put up just 371.

Queen’s played a full three games (198:39) without surrounding a touchdown. They have yet to allow a rushing touchdown in 2011.

Laurier had several opportunities to blow the game open but failed to convert with two touchdowns being called back on penalties. The first came with the game in the second quarter with the game tied at 0. The second came late in the third.

Josh Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont., also stopped the Golden Hawks from scoring, intercepting first quarter pass from Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., in the end zone.

Both kickers exchanged rouges in the second quarter to put the score 1-1. They also exchanged field goals before the half to hold the score at 4-4.

Granberg would finish with just 76-yards on 23 carries and one touchdown, Tyrell Wilson of Hamilton would counter with 73 yards on just 12 carries.

Laurier: 10 Queen’s – OUA Quarter-Finals: 14
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 29, 2011) – In a low scoring affair, Queen’s Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., scored the games lone touchdown as the No. 8 Gaels knocked off the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 14-10 in the OUA Quarter-final at Richardson Stadium.

With the loss, the Golden Hawks season comes to an end and the team fails to reach the OUA Semifinals for the first time since 2002.

In a game that was eerily similar to the Hawks contest a week ago against the Guelph Gryphons, Laurier and Queen’s spent the majority of the first half battling for field position as both defences shut down the opposing offence.

After a scoreless first quarter, Laurier got on the board first thanks to a Ronnie Pfeffer (Kitchener, Ont.) rouge. Queen’s kicker Dan Village of Abbotsford , B.C., would knot the score at one with a rouge of his own later in the quarter.

Before the half was out, both kickers would trade field goals, with Pfeffer hitting from 11 yards and Village nailing a 29 yard attempt, as the two teams went into the locker room tied at four.

Early in the third quarter, it appeared as though the Hawks had taken the lead when Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., connected with Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., in the endzone but the touchdown was wiped out due to a Laurier holding penalty.

Queen’s would then take the lead on a 35 yard field goal by Village but on the Hawks next possession, Pfeffer once again came through for Laurier and tied the game at seven with a 17 yard field goal.

The games turning point game early in the fourth quarter as the Gaels drove down field and on third and one from Lauriers one yard line, Granberg punched the ball in to give Queen’s a 14-7 advantage.

Pfeffer would cut the lead to four with his career-best third field goal of the game but the Hawks never got the ball back as the Gaels ran out the clock to advance to the semifinals.

Chambers had a big performance for Laurier in what could be his last game in a Golden Hawks uniform as he pulled in 11 catches for 111 yards. The 11 catches are the fourth most by a Laurier player in a single game.

Meanwhile, Kelly, in his final game as a Hawk finished 30 of 47 for 307 yards but was intercepted on three occasions.

Kelly’s counterpart Ryan Mitchell of Toronto, who started his first career CIS game in place of injured starter Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont., completed 23 of 38 passes for 272 yards. Gaels receiver Giovanni Aprile of Toronto, was his favourite target, pulling in seven catches for 87 yards.

Queen’s will now move on to face the No. 3 McMaster Marauders in one OUA Semifinal. The Windsor Lancers, who upset the Ottawa Gee-Gees 50-33 on their home turf, will face the No. 4 Western Mustangs in the other semifinal.

NOTES: Linebacker Samuel Aird of Ancaster, Ont., playing in his final game at Laurier, led the team with 5.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss…Laurier was without defensive leader Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., who missed the game after getting hurt against Guelph…in total, seven Hawks played their final game at Laurier, including Kelly, Aird, Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., Shane Herbert of Toronto, George Kourtesiotis of Toronto, Mark Surya of Burlington, Ont., and Luke Thompson of London, Ont….attendance at the game 2,594
