Queen’s add defensive coordinator

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 8, 2018) – Queen’s Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce that Ryan Bechmanis will return to Queen’s as the new assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Gaels football program.

Bechmanis is a former Gael himself, playing five years for the tricolour from 2001 to 2005, after which he joined the coaching staff and served as coach of the defensive backs before adding special teams coordinator to his title. His tenure included the Vanier Cup campaign of 2009. He left Queen’s after the 2011 season to join the Carleton Ravens as their defensive coordinator, and returns to replace Greg Marshall, who took the head coaching position with Toronto earlier this year.

“I am honoured to accept this position and to return to Queen’s,” says Bechmanis. “I have so many great memories here as both a student-athlete and a coach.  I am excited for this opportunity to be back alongside head coach Sheahan and cannot wait to work with the players and coaches.”

For the past seven years, Bechmanis has been instrumental in helping to build the Ravens program from the ground up into a nationally-ranked contender.

“I want to thank Ravens head coach Steve Sumarah, director Jennifer Brenning, all of the players and Old Crows for giving me the opportunity to grow and develop at Carleton. It was a great experience, and I am proud of what we were able to accomplish.”

The Queen’s football Gaels begin their regular season on the road when they visit the York Lions in week one of the OUA season. The Gaels then open up their home schedule on Labour Day weekend against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Richardson Stadium.
