KINGSTON, Ont. (March 24, 2011) – Queen’s students, varsity athletes and recreation program participants will benefit from two new artificial fields to be created over the next year and a half.
The two fields, one to be installed at West Campus and the other one planned for main campus at Kingston Field, will bring the total number of artificial turf fields on campus to three.
The West Campus field, which is the first phase of the West Campus Field and Stadium Project, is targeted for completion this September 2011.
The second artificial turf field is a re-development of the current grass Kingston Field. Fundraising is underway and the goal is to have this project considered by the Board of Trustees Meeting at its next meeting. The targeted completion date for the Kingston Field project is September 2012.
“These new fields will provide Athletics & Recreation with much needed additional capacity across all of our varsity and recreational programming, as well as providing an additional resource that is available for community to use during our ‘off season’,” says Leslie Dal Cin, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
“Our current grass fields have well exceeded their capacity and with three artificial turf fields on campus, we will see an increase in the available amount of programmable field time grow from an estimated 900 hours per year on grass fields to over 6,300 as a result of the transition to artificial turf.”
Ms Dal Cin says all outdoor sports will be positively affected. “Certainly our football, soccer and rugby programs have been in need of better fields for both practices and games – this news will certainly meet their needs,” she says.
