Queen’s announces final recruits & transfers

KINGSTONĀ – Queen’s football head coachĀ Pat SheahanĀ is pleased to announce the final Ā signing of recruits and transfers to the Gaels football program for 2015.

Joining Queen’s are quarterback Mathew Duffy (Kanata, Ont.), receiver Rudy Uhl (North Vancouver, B.C.), defensive lineman Allen Champagne (Verdun, Que.), running back Joey McKiernan (Kanata, Ont.), tight end John Bews (Pointe-Claire, Que.), offensive lineman Etienne Bergeron (Lachine Que.), running back Brodie Latimer (Sydenham, Ont.) and Kurtis Schaefer (Stittsville, Ont.).

“This is a big day for Queen’s and a big day for Queen’s football,” said head coachĀ Pat Sheahan. “Not only is it a big day for the athletes but I understand the importance for the families as well. We have some great athletes from both near and far today with a good mix of some who are starting their careers and some who are finishing off their careers here at Queen’s.”

Unable to attend but also committing to the Gaels are receivers Ian Farrell (Halifax, N.S.), Ross Cameron (Peterborough, Ont), Benson Auld (Halifax, N.S.). linebackers Donte Dehaney (Brampton, Ont) and Richard Byrne (Gananoque, Ont), defensive backs Connor Gascoigne (Halifax, N.S), Tyler Satino (Brampton, Ont), Curtis Smith (Burlington, Ont) and defensive lineman Spencer Giffin (Kingston, Ont).

The Queen’s football Gaels begin their regular season when they welcome the Carleton Ravens to Kingston on Sunday August 30, 2015. Kick-off is set for 1pm at Richardson Stadium

Awards and achievements:Ā Played four years with North Carolina Tar Heels (NCAA)…Key special teams performer who appeared in all 12 regular season games in 2014…Valuable special teams contributor who saw action in all 12 games in 2013…Had a memorable tackle on punt coverage in the season opener against South Carolina …Appeared in six games in 2012, primarily on special teams… Joined North Carolina as a walk-on in 2011…Recipient of UNC’s prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship…Exercise and sport science and biology double major at UNC… Younger brother of Philippe who played for Queen’s and was captain in 2004 becoming the first French Canadian to hold that role in team history.

Awards and achievements:Ā Played withĀ Myers Riders Jr. in the OVFL… Grandson of Dave Thelen who Ā is a formerĀ Canadian Football LeagueĀ running backĀ for theĀ Ottawa Rough RidersĀ and theĀ Toronto Argonauts and was inducted into theĀ Canadian Football Hall of FameĀ in 1989… Also the nephew of John Thelen who played five years for Queen’s and was a Conference All-Star in 1997.
