Queens ends Varsity Blues playoff hopes

KINGSTON, Ont. – A pair of touchdown passes by Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) led the No. 6-ranked Queen’s Gaels to a 35-7 win over the U of T Varsity Blues in OUA football action at Richardson Stadium, Saturday.

 The third-year quarterback completed scoring passes to Curtis Carmichael (Scarborough, Ont.) in the second quarter and Alex Carroll (Victoria, B.C.) in the third quarter and went 14-for-18 for 182 yards, as the Gaels picked up their sixth win of the season.
The Gaels had previously clinched third place in the OUA, and home field in the quarterfinal round.
Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) opened the scoring for Queen’s with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, as the Gaels led 14-0 after the first quarter and 14-3 at halftime. The other Queen’s major came on an 83-yard punt return by Chris Patrician (Toronto, Ont.) with less than two minutes to go. A field goal by Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) and a pair of safety touches rounded out the scoring for Queen’s.
Toronto responded with a 33-yard field goal by Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont.) on the last play of the first half and a pair of fourth-quarter safety touches.
Granberg finished with 25 carries for 95 yards to lead all rushers. Giovanni Aprile (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gaels’ receivers with five catches for 84 yards.
For Toronto, Simon Nassar (Toronto, Ont. went 13-for-35 for 140 yards. Ashton Nelson (Brampton, Ont.) led the Blues rushers with eight carries for 31 yards.
The Gaels outgained Toronto 260-165, and made 19 first downs, to the Blues’ 11. The Gaels limited to Toronto to only 66 rushing yards.
Defensively, Queen’s was led by Sam Sabourin (Stittsville, Ont.), who had 5.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss The Gaels made five sacks, led by 2.5 by Will Moodie (Calgary, Alta.)
With the loss, U of T finished with a 2-6 record, and sees their playoff drought extended to 17 seasons.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 27, as they host the sixth-seeded Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in an OUA quarter-final. Kickoff at Richardson Stadium is set for 1 p.m., and tickets will be on sale at the Athletics & Recreation Centre main desk throughout next week.

The Varsity Blues football team dropped a 35-7 decision to the No. 6 Queen’s Gaels in their final regular season game on Saturday, October 20 at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont.
The Blues end the season with a 2-6 record, while the Gaels (6-2) finish in third place in the OUA standings.
Third-year Blues linebacker Christopher Johnson (Scarborough, Ont.) led all players with 8.5 tackles and one sack, while sophomore Dylan Gordon (Cambridge, Ont.) had 7.5 tackles and one forced fumble.
Simon Nassar (Toronto) took on quarterbacking duties for the Blues, going 13-for-35 for 140 yards. Fourth-year veteran Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) had three catches for 50 yards, while London, Ont., native Alex Pierzchalski had 35 receiving yards on five catches.
The Blues could only muster 66 yards on the ground, compared to the Gaels 150. Rookies Lukas Gavac (Mississauga) and Ashton Nelson (Brampton) had 27 and 31 rushing yards, respectively, in the loss.
The Gaels built a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.  Toronto held Queen’s at bay throughout the second and veteran kicker Andrew Lomasney kicked a 33-yard field goal as the Blues went into halftime down 14-3.
Queen’s widened the gap for good in the third quarter, outscoring the Blues 12-0 with a touchdown, safety and field goal. The Blues added two safeties early in the fourth quarter but could not muster anything else.
Gaels QB Billy McPhee was 14-of-18 for 162 yards and two majors. Ryan Granberg had a game-high 98 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Giovanni Aprile had 84 yards on five catches in the win.
