TORONTO (September 24, 2011) β Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. led the Gaels offense going 17-23 for 328 passing yards, three touchdowns and rushing for an additional touchdown to lead the Queen’s Gaels (2-2) over the York Lions (1-3) by a 63-3 score in week four action of OUA football.
Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. continued his strong play this season as he rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Granberg’s biggest play of the day was a 50 yard touchdown run at the start of the second half putting the game out of reach.
On defense the Gaels had three interceptions and one for a touchdown, which was a 46 yard pick from Yann Dika-Balotoken of Toronto. It was the rookie’s first touchdown and interception of his career.
The Lions were led by William Austin of St. Catherine’s, Ont. who contributed 60 yards on eight catches in a losing effort.
In the first quarter McPhee and the Gaels built some momentum after Giovanni Aprile of Toronto caught a 20 yard pass to get the Gaels in York territory. McPhee was then able to take the option in on his own for a 15 yard rush and the score.
A few minutes later a tipped pass landed right into the hands of Joshua Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont. who then got the Gaels into great field position looking to increase their early lead. The play led to an eventual touchdown for Abbotsford B.C. native Justin Chapdelaine who split the Lions defense for the score putting the Gaels ahead 14-0.
Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. would keep the chains moving with a big 30 yard rush. Granberg would then finish off the play with a one yard rushing touchdown to put the Gaels up 20-0.
Granberg would get his second score of the day early in the second quarter when he took the ball down the sidelines for a 50 yard touchdown run putting the Gaels out in front 27-0. On the next posession McPhee would find Chris Patrician of Toronto for a 59 yard touchdown to put the score at 34-0.
York would respond as they looked to build momemtum, Brandon Williams of Toronto caught a 29 yard pass from Dimitar Sevdin of Toronto to get the Lions into the Gaels end. The Lions couldn’t make their way through the tough Gaels defense and were forced to punt.
Alex Carroll of Victoria B.C. returned a 70 yard punt for a touchdown making the score 41-0 Gaels.
A 62 yard tipped pass from McPhee ended up in the hands of Chapdelaine who found his way through the Lions defense for the touchdown putting the Gaels up 48-0.
Yann Dika-Balotoken of Toronto recorded his first career interception and touchdown intercepting an errant pass from Sevdin. The score put the Gaels up 54-0.
The Lions continued to try and break through for their first points of the game in the second when Sevdin hit Nathaniel Griffith of Brampton, Ont. for a 39 yard pass setting the Lions up in Gaels territory. Despite the big play the Lions were forced to punt once again.
At the start of the fourth quarter the Lions were finally able to put their first points of the day up on the board. Heneri Dervishi of Toronto kicked a 12 yard field goal to make the score 54-3 for the Gaels.
Aprile continued to tack on points for the Gaels with a 10 yard rushing touchdown putting the Gaels in front 61-3 in the fourth quarter.
The Gaels forced the Lions to concede a safety in the fourth quarter to complete their scoring.
With the win the Gaels move to 2-2 on the season and will return to action on the road next week against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm at Varsity Stadium.

QUEEN’S KNOCKS OFF YORK IN HOMECOMING GAME
TORONTO (Sept. 24) – One week after winning its first game of the season, the York University Lions football team returned home Saturday (Sept. 24) for its homecoming game against the Queenβs Gaels, and was defeated by a score of 63-3.
The Lions had 1,355 fans in attendance for their annual Homecoming game. With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-3 on the season while the Gaels improved to 2-2.
Dimitar Sevdin (Toronto) got his second-straight start at pivot for the Lions. He went 19-35 for 209 yards with three interceptions on the day.
William Austin (St. Catharines, Ont.) led the Lions receiving corps with eight receptions for 60 yards, while rookie Riser Markell (Toronto) led the team in rushing with 11 yards on five carries.
On defence, defensive back Marcus Grandison (Toronto) continued his impressive rookie campaign with a team-high 7.5 tackles. Fellow rookie, linebacker Hussein Hazime (Toronto) followed close behind with 6.5 tackles.
Gaels quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) went 17-23 for 328 yards with three touchdowns on the day. Justin Chapdelaine (Abbotsford, B.C.) led all receivers with 131 yards on six receptions for two touchdowns, and Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) rushed for a game-high 156 yards on eight carries for two touchdowns. Stephen Laporte (Ottawa) led the team in tackles with 4.5.
The Gaels dominated the first quarter, scoring three touchdowns on their first four offensive drives.
After squandering an easy three points on their opening drive courtesy of a missed field goal by Dan Village (Abbotsford, B.C.), the Gaels quickly made amends on their following possession with the gameβs first major. After leading his team deep into Lions territory, McPhee, with no open receivers and determined not to let any more points slip away, tucked the ball away and ran it in himself from 15-yards out for the touchdown.
The Lions were unable to respond on their following drive, which was cut short by a Gaels interception. The turnover proved costly as McPhee would complete a 23-yard touchdown pass to Chapdelaine moments later that put the Gaels up 14-0.
Granberg capped the quarter with a one-yard touchdown run that should have put the Gaels up 21-0, but the Lions defence blocked the extra point, sending the Gaels into the break with just a 20-point lead.
In the second quarter, the Gaels continued to put up points at an alarming rate while the Lions were left searching for answers.
Granberg continued his impressive day on the ground, opening the quarter with a 50-yard touchdown run that increased the Gaels lead to 27-0.
Not to be outdone, McPhee quickly followed up with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Chris Patrician (Toronto) that made it 34-0 Gaels.
Later in the quarter, the Gaelsβ special teams, feeling a bit left out of the action, decided to get involved on offence in a big way, with Alex Carroll (Victoria) returning a Lionsβ punt 70 yards for a touchdown.
McPhee capped a 28-point quarter for his team with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Chapdelaine that put the Gaels up big, 48-0, at halftime.
In the third quarter, it was more of the same. While the Lions did manage to step up on defence and slow the Gaelsβ torrid scoring pace, they still could not find the scoreboard. The Gaels had the lone score of the quarter, an interception returned 46 yards by Yann Dika-Balotoken (Toronto) for a touchdown.
The lone bright spot for the Lions in the quarter was a highlight-reel, one handed grab by receiver Nathaniel Griffith (Brampton, Ont.), who picked up 46 yards on the play. Hobbs also had a big grab for 26 yards in the quarter. The Lions were unable to convert either play into points, however.
The Lions did manage to break the shutout in the fourth quarter with a 12-yard field goal from Heneri Dervishi (Toronto) that cut the Gaels lead to 54-3, but it was the Gaels who scored the final points, adding nine more points before the final horn, which included a 10-yard touchdown run by Giovanni Aprile (Toronto) and a safety.
The Lions will be back on the road next week when they travel to London for a matchup against the defending OUA champion Western Mustangs on Saturday (Oct. 1). Kickoff goes at 1pm.
