Queen’s snatches up Nova Scotia recruit

Halifax defensive back newest recruit to join OUA team’s 2015 class

Queen’s Golden Gaels have been successful in their recruitment efforts on the Atlantic Coast.

This past week, the Golden Gaels signed Connor Gascoigne. The 6’5, 195 pound defensive back from Halifax, Nova Scotia will join the team for the 2015 OUA season.

“Connor Gascoigne is a great catch for Queen’s,” commented Golden Gaels Head Coach Pat Sheahan. “He has size (6’5), speed and athleticism.”

“He is also a high achieving student. He is a great fit for our program. Connor will be part of a young secondary and I am looking forward to seeing it come of age. ”

This past season, Gascoigne guided the Citadel Phoenix of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL) to the Provincial Tier 1 Championship title over Charles P Allen Cheetahs. During the season, he registered 25 tackles, caught two interceptions, had five deflections, scored a touchdown and had eight receptions. His effort on the field garnered him an NSSAFFL Nova Division First Team All-Star selection.

In addition to the Phoenix, Gascoigne has also suited up for the Halifax Argos of the Nova Scotia Indoor Spring League (NSISL) and the Halifax Seahawks of the Nova Scotia Varsity Football League (NSVFL).

For his part, the Nova Scotia defensive back felt the Kingston, Ontario campus provided him the best of both academic and gridiron worlds.

“I committed to Queens because I looked for the best combination between academics, the football program, and the overall feeling of the school; Queen’s has all of those and more,” explained Gascoigne of his decision.  “I also have a lot of family friends that live close by and I have many friends that go there as well, so that definitely helped.”

“Talking about the football program, I met a few of the coaches, Head Coach Pat Sheahan, Offensive Coordinator Ryan Sheahan, and the Defensive Back Coach Grant Schelske, who were all such awesome guys. They were great to talk to, easy to get along with, and most of all I could see their passion for Queen’s football and it inspired me.”
