Raiders expect to roll over Huskers “offence is going to try and put up 100 points”

The V.I. Raiders should provide a lot of cannon fire when they host the Chilliwack Huskers this Saturday (July 31) at Caledonia Park. The pirate ship at the field that signals Raider scores will most likely be blasting its cannons over and over.

“We’re going to roll those Huskers, that’s a promise,” said Mike Schaper, Raiders receiver, after his team’s 37-13 dismantling of the South Surrey Rams on the weekend.

“We obviously have things to work on. The difference between putting up [37] points and putting up 80? We can accomplish that in this week, especially now that we have the confidence.”

Aaron Davies, Raiders cornerback, said the defence plans to polish its game, blitz hard and fluster the Huskers’ quarterback. He anticipates that the Raiders’ D will benefit from lots of offensive support.

“[Our] offence is going to try and put up 100 points and we’re just going to try and ball,” Davies said.

Eighty points? One hundred points? Clearly this year’s Raiders have no interest in tempering expectations.

They admit that although they’re preparing to take on Chilliwack (0-1), they’re looking ahead a little bit to the following week’s big road game against the Okanagan Sun (1-0).

The important thing for the Raiders at this stage of the season, said coach Matthew “Snoop” Blokker, is not so much to game plan against the opposition as to solidify their own game.

“We’ll spend some time watching film on [the Huskers], but at the end of it it’s going to be all about our fundamentals and getting better and understanding our assignments better,” he said.

GAME ON … The Raiders face the Huskers on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Caledonia Park. Tickets, $12-15, will be available at the gate.
