Rams add third Sun player as Hull signs LOI

REGINA, Sask. – University of Regina Rams head coach Mike Gibson announced Thursday that Layne Hull has signed a CIS Letter of Intent to join the program after a three-season career with the Okanagan Sun.
Originally from Willowbrook, Sask. – about 15 minutes west of Yorkton – Hull starred for the Yorkton Regional HS Raiders before beginning his CJFL career in 2013 with the Sun. This past season, Hull started at dimeback and helped Okanagan win its first BCFC championship since 2004.

β€œLayne is a difference maker on defence and we saw that on full display at the Canadian Bowl last month,” Gibson said. β€œHe’s tall, rangy, can run, and loves to hit you – he’s really what you look for in a defensive player. He’s also great in space, and those guys are hard to find. Normally you usually try to project a guy into this type of player, but he’s a guy who already is that player. We’re thrilled to be able to add him to the program.”

Hull’s breakout performance at the Canadian Bowl saw him earn Larry Wruck Defensive Player of the Game honours despite the Sun falling to the host Saskatoon Hilltops by a 38-24 score. Hull had two solo tackles, three assisted tackles, a punt block that he returned 30 yards for a touchdown, and an interception for the Sun in the national championship game. Over the course of the 10-game BCFC regular season, Hull accumulated 14 solo tackles, seven assisted tackles, 3Β½ sacks, and a forced fumble for the Sun as they went a perfect 10-0 in league play. He also had six tackles in the Sun’s win over Kamloops in the BCFC semifinals and six tackles, a sack, and an interception in the team’s victory over Vancouver Island in the Cullen Cup.
Hull, who’s projected as either a linebacker or a defensive back with the Rams, is the 10th player to be announced as part of the team’s 2016 recruiting class – and the third from the Okanagan Sun, as he’ll join junior teammates Cord Delinte and Thomas Huber at the U of R.
