CJFL Player of the Year joins OUA team’s 2014 class.

The McMaster Marauders a received rare present and it didnā€™t even come from the Easter Bunny.

On Monday, the team landed the 2013 Wally Buono Award Winner to their 2014 recruiting class.Ā  Asher Hastings committed to the team for the 2014 OUA season.

For the 6ā€™4, 215 pound pivot from Regina, Saskatchewan, he felt that the Marauders were the team that could further him in his quest to achieve his ultimate goal on the gridiron.

ā€œI chose McMaster because it is a great place to finish my education and an extremely competitive football program,ā€ explained Hastings of his decision.Ā  ā€œThe coaching staff has a tremendous amount of knowledge, and I look forward to learning from them to meet my goal of reaching my own full potential as a quarterback.ā€

Hastings joins the Marauders after leading the Regina Thunder of the Prairie Football Conference (PFC) in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) to the 2013 Canadian Bowl Championship.Ā  In six regular season games in 2013, the quarterback had 118 completions in 189 attempts for 1765 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes.Ā  Hastings had a league leading 62.4 percent completion rate as well as a league leading 103.3 efficiency rating.

In three playoff games this past season, Hastings had 73 completions in 103 attempts for 947 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and one interception.Ā  Moreover, the pivot had a 781 percent completion rate.

For his efforts this past season, he was named the recipient of the Wally Buono Award earlier this month, which is given to the CJFL Player of the Year.

Previous to the Thunder, Hastings played for his high school team, Martin Collegiate Monarchs of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA).

As for the Marauders, the team is looking forward to welcoming Hastings into the fold.

ā€œAsher has had an excellent career with the Regina Thunder and we are thrilled he has decided to pursue his education and football goals at McMaster,ā€ commented Marauders Offensive Coordinator Jon Behie.Ā  ā€œGetting a player out of the PFC is extremely rare for McMaster, but Asher is a very talented quarterback and with three years of eligibility remaining, has a bright future here in Hamilton.ā€
