Rare rainout for G-Men

An hour away from departing for Saturday afternoon’s Ontario Junior Football League game in Barrie, the Kingston Limestone Grenadiers were told to rest easy.

Ditto for the varsity squad, which was supposed to follow an hour or so later.

No need for hurry. Both games were cancelled due to poor field conditions.

Unless a monsoon hit the Barrie area overnight, it’s safe to assume the Huronia Stallions’ home gridiron isn’t much of a sponge.

“I got a call at 7:22 (Saturday) morning saying the field was unplayable,” said G-Men executive member Peter Wilkie. “I was to understand it was under water.

“At any rate, the City of Barrie took one look and said no way.”

Both games have been temporarily re-scheduled to July 11, not the most convenient of dates for the junior squad, which would be minus a key quintet of players on that day. Five G-Men starters are earmarked to compete with Team Ontario (East) at the 2010 Canada Cup tournament.

The junior and varsity teams are back in action next Saturday, guests of the Cumberland Panthers.
