RB/DE Eckert is an opposing head coach’s nightmare

St. Thomas More Collegiate in Burnaby, BC has a rich tradition of greatness in football. Another talent coming out of STMC is Tyler Eckert who plays both running back and defensive end. Filling the stat sheet is an understatement when it comes to Eckert’s game.

In five games played, the STMC knight compiled 574 rushing yards (8.7 yards per rush) and 8 touchdowns. In those same five games, Tyler produced 24 tackles including 8 sacks with multiple fumbles forced and recovered. Eckert also made team BC in this years Canada Cup.

“I think my first step gives me my biggest edge over my opponent and my relentlessness which let’s them know I’m going to go 100 percent each play,” Tyler on what he feels his greatest asset is.

Playing football for four years so far, Eckert wants to continue going into the big leagues and thinks he can make an immediate influence.

“I’d really like to play college football at a school where I can also get a well-respected degree. As a freshman, I want to come in and make the biggest impact I can. I’d like to help the school win right away.” Said the STMC product.

Asking high school athletes who their biggest influences are in football, they usually choose a parent of professional football player. Tyler Eckert chose his coaches, “All 4 coaches taught me not only how to play football but how to love and respect the game. They taught me that your character and how you present yourself off the field are as important as how you are on the field.”

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 210-pounds, the gym has been a goto for Tyler since a young age. He feels that he can continue to get to where he needs to be by the time he chooses a school. “I think I’ll be able to adjust fine. Everyone is bigger, stronger, faster but I plan on working my hardest.”

You can tell when someone is passionate about something and Eckert truly is about football.

“Football to me, isn’t just a sport and something to do with my friends. It has truly turned into a lifestyle where everything I do is to help better me in football and to help better me as a person.”

Eckert is excited for his senior year and feels as if STMC can compete for a city and provincial championship.
