Rebels announce co-head coaches for 2014 season

LANGFORD, B.C. – The Rebels are pleased to announce the hiring of Andrew Axhorn and Tom Fong as their new co-head coaches heading into the 2014 CJFL season.

Andrew brings an extensive career of football beginning with the Edmonton Huskies and then Saint Francis Xavier University; where he received his BA in History and nine years in the AFL as a player and coach. Andrew has lived in Victoria the past five years coaching and playing at various levels of football.

“I am inspired to take on this role with the players and I have been where they are now. It is a low place to be when something we love is in jeopardy.  With the help of coach Fong and these young men we will continue to play football and have fun. A new day has come and it is a new dawn for this team.”

Tom has lived in Victoria since he was 6 where he played for the JR Hornets and JR Payless teams until an injury outside of football ended his playing career.  He began his coaching career in 2002 at the atoms then the Pee Wee levels where his teams won 3 gold and 1 silver cup.  He was the Defensive Coordinator for the Bantam Riders in 20O4 and midget Warriors in 2005.  He held the Head Coaching title for the Victoria Renegades in 2006 and 2007. Currently Tom is the Senior Defensive Coordinator at Mt Douglas Rams where his teams have won one AA and 3 AAA Championships.  He was recruited last year for the Rebels as their Defensive Coordinator.

“I believe in our players, coaches and the community to build this program up to where it was in the past and to be proud to say you’re a Rebel.

I know it will be hard work for everyone and many film night sessions for the coaches but I think we have what it takes  to field a competitive team this year and build for the future.

Team President Elise Pastro on the duo leading the charge; “junior football has over 70 years of history in the Victoria area and The Westshore Rebels are proud to be a part of that continuance of bridging football players from junior, college, university and the CFL. We look forward to giving our communities on Vancouver Island many hours of our team spirit on and off the field.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
