RECAP [Can West] Bisons stun Calgary; Rams secure final spot; Huskies end T-Birds season [stats]

WINNIPEG – As to further exemplify the crazy, Canada West football conference during the 2014 season, another stunning result occurred on the final regular season weekend of action as the Manitoba Bisons upset the #2 ranked Calgary Dinos by a 50-31 score on Saturday, November 1 at Investors Group Field (U of Manitoba campus) in front of 1,123 fans.

With the win, Manitoba completed the regular season at 4-4 and clinched a playoff spot. That spot was then determined when Regina defeated Alberta later in the day by a 35-31 score and now the Bisons will finish in third place and face the Saskatchewan Huskies on Fri., Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. CT. Calgary ends up with a 6-2 record and first place in Canada West regular season standings.

Manitoba was trying to reverse an earlier result in the 2014 campaign when Calgary defeated the Herd 42-41 at home on Sept. 26. And with the win, Manitoba also snapped a ten game conference reg. season losing streak (plus two more post-season losses) against Calgary that dated back to the last time the Bisons defeated the Dinos was during the 2007 Vanier Cup championship perfect season by the Herd.

On this day, the home side came out with some tricks up their sleeves as the first offensive play of the game had slotback Nic Demski take a handoff and instead of running, he threw a 43 yard dart to wide receiver Dustin Pedersen to put them deep in Calgary territory. Two plays later, Demski ended the drive with a catch in-between two defenders for a 26 yard TD reception and an early 7-0 lead.

After a Dinos field goal, a huge turning point early in the contest was a blocked punt by Alex Christie that ricochet off his hands and into defensive back Jayden McKoy‘s hands. McKoy promptly returned it 60 yards for an improbable Bison touchdown.

This would not be the last of Christie and blocking kicks.

At the end of the first quarter, Bison starting quarterback Theo Deezar found Demski down the middle for a quick 75 TD strike and a 21-6 margin.

Every time the visitors wanted to mount a comeback, Manitoba would respond. Calgary closed the gap to 21-13 on Dinos’ starting quarterback Andrew Buckley 15 yard run but just before half, the Bisons had a short field and drove down with another touchdown by Kienan LaFrance. He capped the drive with a two yards TD plunge and at half; the number two team in the country was down 30-13.

Just like in the second, Calgary rushed out to a quick TD when backup QB Jimmy Underdahl scored on a one yard run but any lasting momentum for the Dinos was snuffed out at the end of the third when Demski found pay dirt again with a great tough grab in the end zone from eight yards out and a 37-20 lead by Manitoba.

The fourth quarter highlighted Christie with his ten yard TD run and then another block, which lead to Jordan Linnen recovery and a seven yard scamper into the end zone. Calgary completed the scoring when Underdahl found Rashaun Simonise for a 34 yard TD reception and a final 50-31 score.

Bison football head coach Brian Dobie commented afterwards, “Calgary has been the team of this conference for a long time and I am particularly proud of this team and how they responded today when everything was on the line. They know what they accomplished but they also know what is next and the team is focused for the playoffs.”

There is a big possibility of conference player of the week honours to be swept by the Manitoba Bisons on this home performance. Demski hauled in three receiving touchdowns (tied a Bison record) with 126 yards on four catches for a whopping 31.5 average. McKoy scored a touchdown plus added two athletic interceptions and 4.5 total tackles to be a dominant player on the ‘D’ and Christie blocked two kicks to turn the tide in the game while also scoring once and rushed for 44 yards on seven carries.

In addition for Manitoba, Deezar was 10-18 for 210 yards and three TDs and 1 INT and LaFrance registered 57 rushing yards while Zack Regert had 77 receiving yards on four catches. Linebacker DJ Lalama had a game-high 11 total tackles, Mitchell Harrison had 5.5 tackles and one break-up and Jonathan Jones notched five tackles and two break-ups for the victors.

Calgary was led by Buckley’s passing for 19-32 and 217 yards and running back Mercer Timmis with 71 rushing yards on 15 carries. Jake Harty was top Dino in receiving with 100 yards on seven receptions while Simonise had 75 receiving yards on five grabs and 1 TD. On defence, Tanner Doll led the visitors with eight total tackles and Connor McGough finished with 3,5 tackles and one sack.

Next week the playoffs start. Manitoba travels to play #8 Saskatchewan (6-2) in one of the Canada West Semi-Final match-ups on Friday, November 7 at 7 p.m. CT. #2 Calgary will now host the Regina Rams (3-5) on Saturday, November 8 at 3 p.m. MT in the other conference semi-final.

DInos lose to Bisons 2014

WINNIPEG – The University of Manitoba Bisons used their big-play capability to full extent, handing the University of Calgary Dinos their only on-field loss of the regular season with a 50-31 victory at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg Saturday afternoon.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Bisons, who finish the season at 4-4. Calgary wraps up the year 6-2 officially, having already clinched first place in the conference. The Dinos will host fourth-place Regina in a Canada West semi-final next Saturday, Nov. 8 at McMahon Stadium for a trip to the 78th Hardy Cup, while Manitoba will visit Saskatchewan in the other semi-final on Friday night. Both games will be broadcast live on Shaw TV.

Manitoba was trying to reverse an earlier result in the 2014 campaign when Calgary defeated the Herd 42-41 at home on Sept. 26. Rams defeat Alberta; claim final Canada West playoff spot

REGINA, Sask. – They trailed for almost the entire game, but a late touchdown drive gave the University of Regina Rams a thrilling 35-31 victory over Alberta on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

The four-point victory gave the Rams the season tiebreaker over Alberta after the Golden Bears won by two earlier in the year. Combine that with an upset victory by Manitoba over No. 2 Calgary and Saskatchewan’s win over UBC, and the Rams finish in fourth place in the Canada West standings and will meet Calgary in the Canada West semifinals next weekend.

Though Alberta led for most of the contest, the Golden Bears never had more than an eight-point advantage over the Rams. The U of R hung around long enough and finally broke through late in the fourth quarter as Noah Picton engineered a six-play, 85-yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by Atlee Simon.

That gave the Rams a four-point lead, and on the ensuing drive a 3rd-and-1 situation near midfield was stuffed by lineman Dean Viena to seal the victory.

Picton finished 27-for-40 and his 467 passing yards rank fourth in U of R history. Three Rams receivers hit triple digits, including Jared Janotta (8 catches, 148 yards), Addison Richards (6 catches, 113 yards), and Mitchell Picton (4 catches, 101 yards).

Simon ended up with three touchdown runs for the second straight game and finished with 18 carries for 105 yards.

Alberta’s Curtis Dell was 17-for-30 for 306 yards, while receiver Jimmy Ralph had the only touchdown pass of the game after finding Aundrey Webster out of a wildcat formation. Ralph finished with six catches for 136 yards, while Ed Ilnicki had a strong game on the ground for the Golden Bears with 13 rushes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Dell had Alberta’s other major, scrambling for a three-yard touchdown on the first drive of the game.

Alberta’s defence forced two turnovers during the game, with Tak Landry recording an interception and Codie Abrams forcing a fumble that was recovered by Connor Ralph.

Regina and Calgary will meet at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Saturday for a 2 p.m. (MST) start. The other Canada West semifinal will feature Saskatchewan hosting Manitoba for a 7 p.m. start on Friday.

Huskies end T-Birds’ season

VANCOUVER – A 31-point first-half hole proved too deep for the UBC Thunderbirds to dig themselves out of on Saturday, as they dropped their season finale against the Saskatchewan Huskies 38-18 at Thunderbird Stadium.

The T-Birds needed a win to force a three-way tie for the final playoff spot with Alberta and Regina. UBC would have held the tiebreaker in that scenario and been through to the playoffs, but the ‘Birds were unable to recover from an all-Huskies first half that saw them fall behind 31-0.

“It’s a good group of kids here with some talent but it just did not come together this year,” said UBC head coach Shawn Olson. “In the second half today we challenged their pride and challenged them as men a bit, and they did come out and compete, but if you look throughout the four quarters how we measure up, it was not good enough in all three phases and not enough plays made when there was any challenging situation. That’s the difference between a playoff team and a non-playoff team.”

The T-Birds were pitching a second-half shutout until midway though the fourth quarter. They had cut the lead down to 31-17 and seemed to have all the momentum when a high snap on a Huskies punt attempt led to it being partially blocked, giving UBC the ball at the Saskatchewan 27. But they weren’t able to take advantage of the field position, fumbling a snap of their own before settling for a field goal attempt. Then some confusion with the field goal unit personnel led to a time-count violation penalty for the ‘Birds, moving them back out of field goal range.

The ‘Birds scored a rouge on the ensuing punt from Quinn van Gylswyk to make it 31-18, but the Huskies were able to respond soon after with their first successful drive of the half. They moved the ball efficiently on the ground and through the air, finishing with a 15-yard touchdown run by Tyler Chow for a 38-18 lead.

Huskies quarterback Drew Burko was 20-for-31 for 291 yards and three touchdowns to lead the visitors. Backup quarterback Kyle Siemens also made his mark, completing five passes for 45 yards and one touchdown. Chow was effective all game for the Huskies, racking up 104 yards on 15 carries, including the dagger touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“You have to make plays and execute. We were a little challenged with injuries up front today, but they battled hard and that wasn’t why we lost,” said Olson. “We just didn’t make tough catches, we put the ball on the ground, we lost field position battles and all those things add up to a very small margin for error, which we couldn’t overcome.”

UBC’s scores came courtesy of a 24-yard touchdown grab by Niko Jakobs and then an 81-yard punt return by Marcus Davis in the third quarter. They also got a field goal and a single from van Gylswyk to cut the lead down to two scores at one point.

Davis finished with 149 all-purpose yards to cap off a strong rookie campaign as a lot receiver and return man. Carson Williams went 22-for-42 for 215 yards, a touchdown and an interception at quarterback for the ‘Birds. He also added 39 rushing yards in his final game at UBC.

“There are a lot of really young talented guys on this team but talent and potential has to manifest itself into production at some point,” said Olson. “Disappointing year on the whole, especially for our veteran guys who put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this. We had expectations this year and we didn’t meet them.”

Manitoba beat Calgary earlier on Saturday to claim third place in the conference. Regina took down Alberta 35-31 to win the fourth playoff spot by the narrowest of margins. They finished tied with Alberta at 3-5 and went 1-1 in head-to-head games, and they had a plus-2 point differential in those games.

Calgary finished first in the conference at 6-2. They will host Regina next weekend to open the playoffs.  The Huskies also went 6-2 to take second place, and they will host the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
