RECAP: Carabins gain sole possession of second place with victory over Stingers [stats]

Montreal Β – In a battle of second place teams, the Montreal Carabins thumped the Concordia Stingers 36-3 Saturday afternoon at Concordia Stadium. The Blues have scored 20 unanswered points in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Carabins, who are ranked fifth in the country, now have a 5-1 record. After four wins in a row early in the season, the Stingers, who are ranked ninth in the nation, have now suffered two consecutive losses.

Early in the game, the Carabins relied on special teams and defense to gain momentum. First, Mikhail Davidson returned a 75 yard punt for a touchdown. The Carabins took a 6-0 lead as the conversion attempt was blocked. A little later, the Stingers were stopped on third-and-one yard cross.

“This is the fifth consecutive victory and we are in the position we wanted to be in before the bye week,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “Special teams gave us good momentum early in the game.”

“The defense did not concede much. We have been able to exploit the holes in the opposition’s defense. We need these three facets of the game to excel. ”

Taking the ball to the Concordia 54 yard line, the offensive unit was able to convert into points on the scoreboard. After missing the last two games, running back Sean Thomas Erlington scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a two-yard run.

Then, the defense once again gave an advantageous position to attack on the ground thanks to an interception by Anthony Coady. The latter ran the ball for 31 yards. Gabriel Cousineau then connected with Davidson for a 42 yard touchdown reception. It kept all Davidson’s concentration to make a spectacular catch. At the end of the first quarter, it was 20-0 for the Carabins.

“It was time that I ended my drought, Coady said with a smile, who has three interceptions last season. Β ”

In the end, Davidson caught five passes for 69 yards in gains by the half, and was rested by his coaches. The Carabins receiver has scored eight touchdowns this season, including one on the ground and one on special teams.

Despite a Keegan Treolar 46 yard field goal to cut the lead to 20-3, the Carabins continued their work. Having defeated several opponents in the backfield, Gabriel Cousineau spotted Regis Cibasu all alone, and threw him a 46 yard touchdown pass which completed a game which delighted the many Carabins supporter who were in the stands at Concordia Stadium.

Gabe Cousineau versus Concordia 2014

Cousineau once again shined, finishing with an impressive pass completion percentage of 85 percent as he completed 23 passes in 27 attempts for 300 yards and two touchdown passes. His favorite targets were Philip Enchill with eight receptions for 114 yards and RΓ©gis Cibasu with 101 yards on five receptions. Enchill also launched a 35-yard pass to Cibasu on a rigged sequence in the second quarter. Cousineau has completed 71.9 percent of his passes since the start of the season.

“The Stingers have a good defense and they prevented us from making big plays, so I was more conservative in my pass reading,” said Cousineau. “I tried to keep the ball a little longer and give the receivers nice receptions.”

On defense, rookie Jean-Christophe Touchette led the way with 8.5 tackles. Nicolas Gauthier also caught an interception in the second quarter at Colin Sequeira’s expense.

The Stingers earned a meager total of 161 offensive yards against 374 for the Carabins. Sequeira completed seven passes in 16 attempts for 68 yards before giving way to Mario Porreca, who managed two of Β five passes for 32 yards.

In the second half, Louis-Philippe Simoneau had 41 and 18 yard field goals. FΓ©lix MΓ©nard-Briere also scored a single on a 73 yard punt. Β The Stingers conceded a safety early in the fourth quarter.

The Carabins will benefit from a week off. The team will resume action on Saturday, October 25th when they visit Coulter Field in Lennoxville face the Bishop’s Gaiters (1-4).
