RECAP: Carabins hand Laval first setback after record streak [stats]

Laval Β – The Montreal Carabins played spoiler during the last regular season game for the Laval Rouge et Or at CEPSUM on Saturday afternoon. Montreal took the lead for the first time in the game late in the third quarter, and held out to win 13-9 and thus ending the record streak of 25 straight wins at Laval University.

For the first time this year, the Rouge et Or offense was unable to put points on the board. The Rouge et Or still finishes in first place for the tenth consecutive time with a 7-1 record. Montreal has an identical record, but the point differential in games between the two teams gives Laval the advantage. The CIS consecutive streak of 25 games was established by the Rouge et Or began following a 23-20 victory over the Carabins at CEPSUM October 13, 2012.

In the first half, Rouge et Or kicker Boris Bede was responsible for getting the team on the scoreboard with a rouge in the first quarter and another in the second. After a 37 yard field goal early in the third quarter, it was Boris Bede 7 – Carabins 0. Β Louis-Philippe Simoneau responded for the Carabins with a 25-yard field goal that broke the ice for the Carabins.

After a safety was conceded by the Carabins to give Laval a 9-3 lead, the tide then turned in favor of the Carabins. First, a long drive ended with a touchdown courtesy of a Gabriel Cousineau one yard quarterback sneak. Montreal then took a 10-9 lead. It was the first time this season that the Rouge et Or trailed after the first three quarters. Simoneau added a second field goal of 11 yards, to give a cushion of four points for his team. This was the largest deficit the Rouge et Or faced this season.

The Rouge et Or came through down field late in the fourth quarter, but failed to convert a third set of the Carabins 10 yards to 20 yards. Β Laval got one last chance to cross the field with 51 seconds to play, but the Montreal’s defense held on for the victory.

For the first time this season, quarterback Hugo Richard failed to surpass the 200 yard passing mark, finishing with 138. His total of 2578 in 2014, is a team record, a CIS record for a rookie, and the fourth best in RSEQ history. Richard had 14 completions in 28 attempts, but was intercepted once, his fourth of the season. Richard completed 65.3% of his passes this fall. The number of touchdown passes also stops at 22, Β as Richard failed to reach anyone in the end zone Saturday.

Felix Lechasseur was Richard’s favorite target as he had five receptions for 27 yards. On the ground, Richard also led the team with 53 yards. Maxime Boutin and Guillaume Bourassa have both accumulated 47 yards. Boris Bede was responsible for almost all the Rouge et Or points with four singles and a field goal.

The Rouge et Or defensive forced the Carabins to concede a safety. Vincent Desloges had two sacks and finished with a season sack record of 0.5 which was held since 2012 by Jean-Samuel Blanc Carabins. Shayne Gauthier led both teams with 11 tackles, including nine solo.

The playoffs begin at home next Saturday for the Rouge et Or as they will host the Concordia Stingers November 8th at 1:00pm.
