RECAP: Carabins need overtime to dethrone Laval & win first Dunsmore Cup [stats]

Laval Β – For the first time in 10 years, the Rouge et Or lost on the field Saturday afternoon. Β The Rouge et Or fell 12-9 in overtime to the Montreal Carabins in the Dunsmore Cup final in front of 13,698 spectators at TELUS Stadium.

Behind 6-0 at halftime, the Rouge et Or was able to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. The Carabins regained the lead late on a field goal, but a third field goal by Boris Bede with barely a minute left to play allowed Laval to push the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Carabins were successful on a field goal attempt in their first possession, while the Rouge et Or failed in their attempt, allowing the Carabins to win their first RSEQ title.

“It’s a difficult day,” said Rouge et Or Head Coach Glen Constantin on the first setback for the team since Sept. 19, 2004, also at the hands of the Carabins. Β “I am very proud of the guys.”

“The Rouge et Or program is not defined by a season or a game, but throughout time. This fate was due to arrive a day and there is a bright future here. We will rise and we will continue to work hard.”

Constantin also praised the Carabins defensive front.

“They had good defensive schemes, which caused us problems,” added Constantin. Β “We could not use our aggressive style the way we wanted.”

The Carabins only points of the first half came from kicker Louis-Philippe Simoneau. Β He added two field goals – Β 35 and 22 yards, giving the Carabins a Β 6-0 lead after 30 minutes.

The difference would have been greater had it not been for the brilliance of the Laval defensive. Early in the second half, Montreal ended up with a first down at the Laval four yard line. The Rouge et Or stopped their opponent three times, the last on a long pass attempt deep in the end zone intended for Regis Cibasu.

Laval approached its second offensive series of the third quarter. The Rouge et Or knocked on the door of the goal line but had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Boris Bede. It was then a 6-3 deficit.

Then the Rouge et Or increased their chances in the early moments of the fourth quarter thanks to another field goal of 15 yards. But Montreal replied with a little less than five minutes to play with a 19 yard field goal by Simoneau.

At the end of quarter, Shayne Gauthier played the hero and forced the fumble which was recovered by Vincent Chabot. The Rouge et Or advantageously repositioned on the ground, allowing Boris Bede to boot a successful field goal and force overtime.

In overtime, the Carabins struck on their first possession as Simoneau was successful on a 22 yard attempt. Laval had difficulty advancing when it came to their turn to attack. Β Bede attempted a 47 yard field goal but it just went wide of the posts, giving the victory to the visiting Carabins.

Rouge et Or pivot Hugo Richard completed 17 of 32 passes for 264 yards. Tyrone Pierre was his favorite target with six catches for 121 yards. On the ground, Richard carried the ball nine times for gains of 54 yards.

Defensively, Mathieu Masseau had a strong game with 7.5 tackles, including a sack, and a pass knockdown.
