RECAP: Carabins prevail over Sherbrooke in dramatic battle [stats]

Montreal Β – In a game that was decided on the last play, the Montreal Carabins defeated the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 22-16 on Saturday afternoon at CEPSUM.

This is the fourth consecutive win in five starts this season for the Carabins.

While the score was 17-16 for the Carabins during most of the second half, rookie Louis-Philippe Simoneau (Industrial Relations) kicked a 39-yard field goal to make the score 20-16 with less than ten minutes left on the clock.

“It was a big game to see our young kicker to give us a four-point lead, said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “We needed to play a game like that, a tight duel with adversity.”

“It was also a good test for our defense to protect a slim lead for much of the game. It will help us in the long term.”

Then, the Vert & Or conceded a safety, but the team was able to get one last chance to attack with just over a minute left to play.

From their five yard line, the Vert et Or reached the Carabins 41 yard line. On the last play of the game, Alex Cromer-Emond (Medicine) managed to pin Vert et Or quarterback Jeremi Roch behind the line of scrimmage to end the game.

“We live to play games like this,” said Cromer-Emond, who registered eight tackles and recorded two sacks. “I’m glad I had the chance to end the game.”

“I’m surrounded by good players who are doing great work and I try to pick up the crumbs on the ground. They conceded 16 points in the first half and we said it had to stop there. ”

Linebacker Byron Archambault (Security and Police Studies) also had a busy afternoon with a total of eight tackles, including seven solo and two sacks.

A spectacular first half

The Carabins attack was felt on the first play of the game. Gabriel Cousineau (Administration, HEC Montreal) found Mikhail Davidson (Economics) all alone. Davidson picked up the ball and raced into the end zone for 105 yards. This is the longest pass play in team history.

Cousineau had a very good outing, completing 22 of his 33 pass attempts for a total of 343 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was rookie Regis Cibasu (Administration, HEC Montreal), who caught seven passes for 97 yards.

“I’m very happy to have contributed to the success of the team,” said Cibasu. “You could feel the intensity of the rivalry through the veterans.”

“We had fun and it was an important victory that feels good.”

However, on their next possession, the Carabins were forced to concede a safety. Then, the Vert et Or began their advance. David Dumas-Goulet was successful racing 44 yards near to the end zone. Jeremi Roch completed a two yard touchdown pass to Antoine Gosselin.

Roch managed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 304 yards. He also managed a touchdown and threw one interception. In total, the Carabins attack won a total of 496 yards against 442 for the Vert et Or.

In the second quarter, after a long sequence of nearly five minutes totalling 77 yards, Simoneau kicked a 29-yard field goal. Β In the next drive, Cibasu took a 48 yard pass from Cousineau to score his first CIS career touchdown.

The Vert et Or responded as Alexander AubΓ© rushed into the end zone for a 59 yard touchdown score to cut the lead to 17-16 still in favor of Montreal. Nicolas Gauthier (Administration, HEC Montreal) managed an interception at Roch’s expense late in the first half, but the Carabins had some time to convert this into points on the board. Simoneau narrowly missed a 45-yard field goal on the last play.

This game attracted 4696 spectators at CEPSUM.

The Carabins will travel to Concordia Stadium next Saturday to face the Stingers in a fight for second place in the standings. Kickoff is 1:00pm. Concordia, unbeaten in four games this season, faces the Rouge et Or in Quebec City tomorrow, Sunday. The next Carabins will be broadcast live on CBC TV here and on the web atΒ ici.radio-canada.caΒ .
