RECAP: CFC#36 Saints shuts down visiting Cardinals (VIDEO)

CFC#36 St. Andrew’s College Saints hosted the St. Thomas Aquinas Cardinals from Brampton at the Yuill Family Athletic Complex in the Saints’ first full preseason game of the season. Led by several outstanding individual performances, the Saints rolled to a 35-10 victory.
On offence, rookie quarterback Ben Schmidt was nearly flawless today. Throwing only one incompletion, Schmidt threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more. Slotbacks Ryan Keays and Andrew Biddell were each on the receiving end of one of Schmidtā€™s touchdown passes, and they both enjoyed outstanding days with several other key receptions. CFC#4 running back Jonathan Femi-Cole was his usual dominant self, rushing for over 150 yards and adding a long, explosive touchdown. Meanwhile, fullback Fraser Sopik chipped in with several tough, physical runs. The offensive line, led by veterans Riley Fischer, Duncan Robertson, Liam Joiner and talented rookies Gregor MacKellar and Cayne Lander did an excellent job controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the afternoon.

Defensively, the Saints were faced with a significant challenge facing running back Jevante Stanley. Led by the aforementioned Fraser Sopik at linebacker, as well as fellow linebackers Nick Grossi and Angelis Prattas, the Saints defence did an excellent job of containing the Cardinalsā€™ dynamic athletes. In addition to the linebacker core, defensive end Donald Kwok was a force all day long. The Saints secondary also limited the Cardinals’ passing attack to very few completions, highlighted by cornerback Josh Carterā€™s long interception return in the third quarter. Ā
Next up for the Saints is their Homecoming showdown against the arch-rival UCC BluesĀ next Saturday. Kickoff is set forĀ 3:45 pm, immediately following the official opening of the La Brier Family Arena. The game should prove to be a thrilling culmination to an exciting day.
