RECAP: Hilltops punch ticket to 2014 Canadian Bowl

The Saskatoon Hilltops will make their fourth appearance in the Canadian Bowl in the last five seasons after a 27-7 victory over the Calgary Colts on Sunday to win the Prairie Football Conference championship.

Even without the PFC’s Offensive Player of the Year Wayndel Lewis, the Hilltops gathered 539 yards of total offense, 214 on the ground and 328 yards through the air.

Quarterback Jared Andreychuck completed 20 of 31 passes for 329 yards and threw three touchdown passes.  Davis Mitchell caught nine of those passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Evan Kopchynski hauled in seven balls for 151 yards and a major.

On the ground Logan Fischer sliced through the Colts defense on 28 carries for 185 yards.

The first half saw the Hilltops score 24 of their 27 points on route to their PFC title.

Defensively the created six Colts turnovers, as Derek Sadownick and Bobby Ehman picked off passes and James Vause and Kealy Larson recovered fumbles.  The Colts also turned the ball over twice on downs.

Tom Schnitlzer collected two and a half sacks, while Matt Kozun, the PFC’s Outstanding Defensive Lineman had one and a half sacks.  Justin Filteau led the “D” with five solo tackles.

The Hilltops now travel to Langley to face the Rams in the 2014 Canadian Bowl, a rematch of the 2012 game in which the Hilltops won 23-21.  The game takes place Saturday November 8, 2014.

The Calgary Colts four game road winning streak is snapped and their season comes to a close with the loss.

Like the Hilltops, the Colts most dangerous weapon Cam Fox did not play on Sunday.  Offensively the Colts collected 322 total yards, 232 through the air and 141 on the ground.

Quarterback Brett Hunchak finished 19 of 26 for 205 yards while Cole Meyer completed two passes for 27 yards.  Meyer also caught eight passé for 89 yards while Cole Bazinet hauled in seven passes for 94 yards.

The Colts ground game was led by Xavier Ramsey who galloped 16 times for 81 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Colts did force four Hilltop turnovers.  Brock Ramias and Vince Greco each picked off passes, while Jakub Jakoubek recovered a fumble and had five solo tackles.  The Colts “D” also forced a turnover on downs.

The 2014 Canadian Bowl takes place in Langley BC and will feature the Langley Rams and Saskatoon Hilltops.  Back in 2012 the Hilltops used 434 yards of total offense, 263 of which was through the air to beat the Rams 23-21.  The 2014 game is scheduled for 1:00pm on Saturday November 8th at McLeod Stadium.
