Windsor, ON – The Windsor Lancer Football team (1-1) kept their fans on the edge of their seats as they came from behind twice to defeat the Laurier Golden Hawks 39-34 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After defeating the Golden Hawks (1-1) in overtime last season, all eyes were on Alumni Field and the two teams did not disappoint as the lead continued to trade hands.
Behind by one with 30 seconds remaining in the fourth,Ā Austin KennedyĀ completed a 58 yard pass toĀ Evan PszczonakĀ to complete the Lancer comeback and give the Blue & Gold their second straight win in as many years.
Pszczonak finished the game with 2 touchdowns on six catches and 144 yards. Kennedy went 22-for-38, 326 yards, and 2 touchdowns, while adding 58 yards on the ground and a TD. Running backĀ Beau LumleyĀ added the Lancers fourth touchdown with 61 yards rushing on 10 carriers.
Defensively,Ā Austin CrumbĀ had a solid game with 6.5 tackles, whileĀ Frank RenaudĀ chipped in six.
For the Golden Hawks, quarterback James Fracas went an impressive 25-for-30 to finish the game with 292 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Dillon Campbell netted 177 yards and a touchdown, while receiver Anthony Pizzuti had 96 yards and a score in the air.
Down 13-0 in the second quarter, Windsor took a one point lead heading into the half with a pair of touchdowns from Lumley and Pszczonak.
Early in the third, a conceded safety from Laurier put the Lancers up by three, 16-13, before the Golden Hawks went on a 20-0 run to take a 33-16 lead early in the final quarter.
Laurier kicker Ronnie Pfeffer had a 36-yard and 22-yard field goals to start the run and put the Hawks back on top heading into the final frame.
The Golden Hawks opened the quarter with a two-yard pass to Pizzuti, and added another seven points on their next drive as Greg Nyhof caught a 12 yard pass from Fracas.
Windsor running backĀ Nick VincentĀ kicked off the Lancer comeback with a one-yard touchdown run and Kennedy’s seven-yard scoring run made it a three-point game with just over six minutes to play.
After Campbell fumbled the ball, the Blue & Gold drove the ball down field to set up Malandruccolo’s 43-yard field goal to tie the game.
On their next drive, Laurier kicker Ronnie Pfeffer missed a 44-yard field goal, but Lancer DBĀ Austin CrumbĀ was tackled in the end zone for a single, putting Laurier up 34-33 with 1:41 to remaining.
This set the stage for Pszczonak’s 58 yard pass from Kennedy. The team’s two-point attempt failed, but the Lancer defense played strong through the final thirty seconds to hold on for the win.
With a 1-1 record, Windsor now heads into their bye week, while the Golden Hawks, also .500 on the season, will host their rivals from across the street, the Waterloo Warriors in their first home game of the season.

WINDSOR, Ont. ā For the third consecutive meeting, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks menās football team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Windsor Lancers as they fell 39-34 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After taking a 33-16 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Hawks failed to hold off Windsor quarterback Austin Kennedy of Windsor, Ont., and the Lancers for the remainder of the contest. Windsor scored 23 of the last 24 points, including a game-winning 58-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left to earn their third straight win over the Hawks.
āTheyāre a really good opponent, a playoff-quality team,ā said Faulds of the Lancers following the loss. āWe said coming into this game they have a fifth year quarterback and you could see it today that there were times it looked like our defence had him bottled up but he popped free and made some good throws.
āWeāve got to be more consistent on both sides of the ball,ā added the Hawksā head coach. āWe can play better football and weāre going to learn from this.ā
In what was another entertaining affair between two teams who are quickly developing a strong rivalry, Laurier used the momentum earned from their season-opening victory to jump out to a quick lead. A pair ofĀ Ronnie Pfeffer(Kitchener, Ont.) field goals were sandwiched around aĀ Dillon CampbellĀ (Whitby, Ont.) touchdown to stake the Hawks to a 13-0 lead.
Windsor responded late in the second quarter as Beau Lumley of Windsor, Ont., and Evan Pszczonak of Amherstburg, Ont., scored back-to-back touchdowns to give the Lancers a 14-13 lead at the half.
The third quarter was a quiet one offensively for both teams but Laurier managed to grab the lead thanks to Pfeffer. The fourth year kicker connected on two more field goals in the quarter to offset a Windsor safety, giving Laurier a 19-16 edge.
In what was a wild fourth quarter, the Hawks extended their lead just 11 seconds in as quarterbackĀ James FracasĀ of Waterloo, Ont., foundĀ Anthony PizzutiĀ of Hamilton, in the endzone to make the score 26-16.
Laurier then pulled out some trickery asĀ Chris AckieĀ of Cambridge, Ont., recovered an on-side kick, which was followed shortly afterwards by aĀ Greg NyhofĀ (Georgetown, Ont.) touchdown, to push the purple and goldās lead to 17.
However, Windsor did not back down and on the strength of their fifth year quarterback Kennedy, the Lancers roared back over the remaining 14 minutes. Touchdown runs from Nick Vincent of Tecumseh, Ont., and Kennedy pulled the Lancers to within three. After Campbell fumbled on the Hawksā next possession, Anthony Malandruccolo of Windsor, Ont., connected on a 43-yard field goal to tie the game.
Laurier grabbed the lead back with under two minutes to play after a missed Pfeffer field goal resulted in a rouge but Windsor was not finished. On 3rd and 18 and 30 seconds on the clock, Kennedy found Pszczonak behind the Hawks’ coverage and he ran 58-yards untouched for the game-winning score.
Despite the loss, a number of Golden Hawks had strong games including Campbell who ran 25 times for 177 yards and a touchdown, pushing his season total to 470. Fracas, playing at the same stadium where his grandfather Gino coached for a number of years, was very efficient, completing 25 of 30 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns.
āIt was definitely a very emotional game for me,ā said Fracas of playing his first career game in Windsor. āI had a whole bunch of family come out to the game and it kind of pushes you to play even harder. I always want to perform but even more so when Iām playing in front of loved ones.ā
For Windsor, Kennedy and Pszczonak were the big playmakers. Kennedy finished the game 22-of-38 for 326 yards and hit Pszczonak for two touchdowns. The Lancers fifth year receiver had a total of 144 yards receiving on the game.
Up next for the Hawks, they will head home to Waterloo to prepare for their home opener against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 13. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.
NOTES: Pfefferās first quarter field goal was from 49 yards out, a new career longā¦Pfeffer also moved his way up the Laurier record books with a 16-point performance, jumping him into sixth all-time on Laurierās career scoring list with 192 pointsā¦Pizzuti also found the record books on Saturday, making 11 catches, fourth-most in a single game in school historyā¦attendance at Alumni Field was 2,217
