RECAP: Natomagan & Tinker unstoppable, Islanders crush Lac La Ronge, Shellbrook squeak past Chargers

Northern Saskatchewan Football has had an exciting second week of action.

On Tuesday, September 9, 2014, the defending champion Pinehouse Lakers, on the strength of four touchdowns by George Natomagan and three by Johnny Tinker defeated the Beauval Voyageurs 63-19. Brendan Hansen had two touchdowns for the Voyageurs.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2014, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band began football at Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS). The visiting Cumberland House Islanders team had Preston Crane and Denzel Cook each score three touchdowns to win 65-6. Mitchell Bear scored the first touchdown for the SMVS Huskies.

Thursday, September 11, 2014 featured two football games. The La Ronge (Churchill) Chargers played a very good game in Shellbrook but came up a little short losing by a score of 22-18. Connor Boyes had a pair of touchdowns and Josh Beckman added another. In Sandy Bay, the hometown T-Wolves welcomed the Creighton Kodiaks who were playing their inaugural football game this week. Evan Linnick began the scoring for the Kodiaks and by the end of the game had contributed two touchdowns, three kicking conversions, and a field goal for a 39-20 victory. Also scoring touchdowns for the Kodiaks was Brett Smith with two and Chris Reynolds with one. T-Wolves touchdowns were scored by Michael Bear, Ivan McCallum and Ryley Bedard. Brennan Vanmere played a great game on defence for the Kodiaks with three quarterback sacks.

Northern Sask Week 2 2014

At the end of the second week, Pinehouse Lakers are unbeaten and top of the of the Western Division with a 2-0 record. Leading the Eastern Division, the Cumberland House Islanders and Creighton Kodiaks are each 1-0. Leading play in offensive statistics is Johnny Tinker from Pinehouse with 58 points while Brenden Hansen from Beauval has 49. On defense, Brennen Vanmere leads with three quarterback sacks. Seven players have each had an interception.

Looking ahead at week three of Northern Saskatchewan Football action, Green Lake Spirits will begin their season in Pinehouse on Monday. Green Lake did start their season last week due to their game with La Loche being postponed. On Tuesday, Buffalo Narrows Eagles will travel to La Loche to take on the Lakers in their home opener. On Wednesday, Senator Myles Venne will travel to Sandy Bay. The Huskies and T-Wolves will be each looking for their first win of the season. On Thursday, football will finally arrive in Creighton, Saskatchewan as the hometown Kodiaks will play the Cumberland House Islanders. La Ronge Chargers will be hosting the team from Rosthern in a game sponsored by Northland College. This game will highlight a new football score clock at Churchill Field funded in large part by Northlands College and unveiled by CEO Kelvin “Toby” Greschner.
