RECAP (ONT – CISAA): Simmonds powers CFC#4 NP Saints to Homecoming victory

The St; Andrew’s College Saints defeated the SMC Kerry Blues 23-20 yesterday in front of an amazing homecoming crowd. RB Adre Simmonds scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter to propel the Saints to victory.

Offensively, the aforementioned Simmonds finished with over 200 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the day. The explosive rookie has now scored 11 touchdowns in just 4 games. QB Ben Schmidt was at his best in big moments, particularly as he led the offence down the field on the final game-winning drive. TE Andrew Biddell enjoyed another excellent day with several key receptions, while WR Will Merkel hauled in a nice TD reception in the 1st quarter, and then added an incredible 45 yard reception late in the game. Rookie Will Sirman also played extremely well, with several important receptions. Last, but certainly not least, the Saints offensive line of Gregor MacKellar, Lucas Ferreira, George Huchings, Douglas Chen-Young and Cayne Lander was tremendous yesterday against a very big, physical and talented SMC defensive front 7. The Karabin brothers were also outstanding in the TE and FB positions. A special shout out to new kicker James Michaelis, who was a perfect 3 for 3 on PATs and provided a booming leg on kickoffs.

Defensively, the Saints enjoyed big contributions from several athletes yesterday. Luke Wyatt and the aforementioned linemen were all difference makers on the defensive line yesterday, consistently penetrating into the SMC backfield and wreaking havoc against both the run and pass. Linebackers Nick Grossi and Walter Karabin were once again dynamic playmakers all over the field. In the secondary, CB Charlie Illick played perhaps his best game in a Saints uniform, prompting fellow Orangeville resident and SAC football alum Jamal Kett to yell from our sideline, β€œthat kid is a baller!” CB Josh Carter played his best game of the season as well, taking the most difficult coverage matchups and playing with toughness and swagger. Safety Jacob Edwards was able to haul in his first interception of the season as well.

Next up for the Saints is a re-match against the UCC Blues this Wednesday at the Yuill Family Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
