RECAP: Lancers clinch playoff berth [stats]

Windsor Β – The Windsor Lancer Football team clinched a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive year with a 39-29 win over the visiting Ottawa Gee Gees on Friday night at Alumni Field.
Β
With the victory, the Lancers move to 5-1 on the season, while the Gee-Gees drop to 4-3. This is the fourth consecutive season the Lancers have qualified for the post season under the guidance of head coachΒ Joe D’Amore.

Tai PhamΒ made Lancer history in the win becoming Windsor’s all-time leader in career sacks with 17.5.
Β
Lancer quarterbackΒ Austin KennedyΒ led the Blue & Gold with 227 yards and one touchdown on 16-for-28 passing. His touchdown puts him 5 passing touchdowns away from securing the OUA record, currently held by Josh Sacobie with 79.
Β
On the ground, the Lancers were once again led byΒ Tarrence CrawfordΒ with 142 yards and one touchdown.Β Beau LumleyΒ had an exceptional game for Windsor leading all receivers with 99 yards on 6 catches, and contributing 91 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Β
Defensively,Β Joe IatzkoΒ had a standout game with 12.5 total tackles and 2 sacks.
Β
Ottawa quarterback Derek Wendel finished the game 25-for-44 for 326 yards, with three touchdowns, two interceptions, and five sacks. Bryce Vieira led the visitors in rushing with 83 yards and a touchdown, while Mitchell Baines had 81 yards in the air on seven catches.
Β
Tarik BonasΒ kicked off the Lancers first scoring drive when he picked off Wendel and went 48-yards down the field to the Ottawa 2-yard line.Β Nick VincentΒ finished the score on the next play with a two yard jaunt into the end zone.
Β
Just four minutes later,Β Tarrence CrawfordΒ went 27-yards into the end zone for the Lancers second score of the quarter.
Β
Anthony MalandruccoloΒ kicked off the second quarter with a 14 yard field goal on the Lancers first drive of the frame to put Windsor up 17-1.Β Beau LumleyΒ added to the score board at 6:19 of the quarter, giving the Blue & Gold a 24-1 edge.
Β
The Gee-Gees did not back down and went on a 14-0 run to close out the half as Vieira added two scores, a one yard run and a 22 yard pass from Wendel.
Β
Windsor opened the second half with a 12-0 run that spanned the entire third quarter and included a safety, a four yard pass from Kennedy toΒ Dylan Whitfield, and a 19-yard field goal from Malandruccolo.
Β
The final quarter saw the Gee-Gees attempt a late rally, including a TD on the final play of the game, but the Lancer defense held the visitors at bay to seal the win 39-29.
Β
The Lancers will now hit the road to close out the regular season as they head to the nation’s capital next Saturday to take on the Carleton Ravens, and will close out the year in London against their arch rivals, the Western Mustangs. Both games can be seen live atΒ www.oua.tv.

Lancers defeat Ottawa 2014

Lancers ride to victory

The Windsor Lancers took advantage of home field and an early lead to capture a 39-29 victory in a pivotal OUA matchupΒ on FridayΒ night. The win vaults Windsor to 5-1 on the season while Ottawa falls to 4-3.

At times the Windsor offence seemed able to move the ball at will, proving to be extremely efficient for spurts during the first and third quarters. Windsor pivot Austin Kennedy passed for 227 yards and running back Tarrence Crawford broke loose for a season-high 142 yards which included an 81-yard carry in the third quarter which set up the game-clinching Windsor touchdown.

After Ottawa scored a 42-yard rouge by Domenic Bellardini to open the game, Windsor jumped ahead by posting 24 straight points through a combination of passing, rushing, and defence. Derek Wendel started the game 1-6 on passing attempts and also threw an interception on the third possession of the game.

The pass was picked off by Tarik Bonas at the Ottawa 51-yard line and he ran it back all the way to the two yard line before he was stopped by Bryce Vieira. Wendel was intercepted once more in the fourth quarter and dealt with constant pressure from the Lancers, who picked up five sacks on the night.

Ottawa’s offence got going at the start of the second, ignited by rushes from Vieira and Mack Tommy but fueled by a more efficient air attack. Vieira cashed in two touchdowns, one on a goal-line drive and one on a 22-yard catch, and the Gee-Gees were down 24-15 at halftime.

The Gee-Gees were still stalled at 15 points at the end of the third quarter, and saw the Windsor advantage grow to 36-15 before Vieira got back on the board with ten minutes to play in the fourth frame. Ottawa has struggled all season with the third stanza, being outscored 45-13 overall.

Ben Fisher added a touchdown with less than thirty seconds on the clock to round out the Gee-Gees scoring.

Ottawa heads into week eight of the OUA regular season with a bye, giving the team two weeks to prepare for its final opponent, the first place McMaster Marauders. The game will be onΒ Saturday, October 25Β at Gee-Gees Field.
