RECAPS (OUA): Strong start leads ‘Stangs; Laurier dominates; Gee-Gees get past Blues; Lancers remain undefeated, [stats]

WATERLOO  – The Western Mustangs football team got off to a fast start, scoring 21 points in the opening 10 minutes, and never looked back, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 69-3 on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.

β€œYou know it is what it is. I thought that up front we’re just stronger than they are. We didn’t want to just keep running the same plays and hammer and that but guys ran hardβ€” I think we got our feet underneath us,” said Western head coach Greg Marshall following the game. β€œDefensively it wasn’t our best game, we were a little bit undisciplined early in the game and made some breakdowns on assignments but coach Gleason gave us a better idea of what those issues were. You know, I just see the chains moving and it’s not a good thing so… it wasn’t as well as we could play, certainly defensively. I thought on special teams we did a good job returning.

β€œWaterloo’s going to get back and they’re going to get back to it and they’ll be better. We certainly didn’t want to embarrass them today. We tried as much as we could to control the score.

Eight Mustangs had touchdowns in Saturday’s win as the team racked up 753 yards of total offence, while limiting the Warriors to 183 offensive yards.

Starting quarterback Will Finch topped the Mustangs score sheet with 207 yards on 10-for-17 passing with three touchdowns. The Burlington native also added 12 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown in his two quarters of action before giving way to backup Stevenson Bone in the second half. Bone went 6-for-8 in the air with 145 yards passing, one touchdown, and one interception, along with 31 yards rushing on five attempts.

The Mustangs rushers recorded 401 yards on the ground with four players running for more than 50 yards on the day. Third-year back Yannick Harou had an excellent game, rushing for 104 yards on only eight attempts with one touchdown, while also recording 94 yards on punt returns for a total of 198 yards in the win. Rookie running back Alex Taylor shined in the second half, rushing for 102 yards on seven carries, including one for 48-yards, and one touchdown. Rounding out the Mustangs top rushers were Alex Sinclair with 74 yards, and Garret Sanvido with 65 yards and two touchdowns.

Ten different Mustangs served as targets in the team’s passing attack with four players, Brian Marshall, Matt McDougall, Matt Brazier, and George Johnson, all finding the end zone.

Defensively, Ricky Osei-Kusi led the purple and white with 3.5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble, which he also recovered. Kicker Zack Medeiros scored 15 points on the day, going 9-for-9 on extra points as well as making both field goal attempts.

β€œLots of young guys got inβ€” they got a chance to play,” said Marshall. β€œWe got some touches on the ball for Alex [Taylor] and Chuck Wall got in there and played and Stevenson got some reps.”

The Mustangs didn’t wait long to put points on the board as Yannick Harou racked up 46 yards, including a fantastic 34-yard run, to put Western up 7-0 after the team’s first drive four minutes into the game. The score jumped to 14-0 for the Mustangs only a minute later as an interception by Josh Woodman set up a 35-yard touchdown pass from Finch to George Johnson on the ensuing play to extend the Mustangs lead. Garret Sanvido then capped off the Mustangs fast start just over three minutes later, with a three-yard touchdown run to give Western a 21-0 lead less than ten minutes into the contest.

Waterloo got on the board late in the first, as Caleb Girard hit a 41-yard field goal to cut Western’s lead to 21-3. It appeared the score would stay that way for the remainder of the quarter, until a forced fumble from Osei-Kusi set up a 45-yard catch-and-run from McDougall to give Western a 28-3 lead entering the second frame.

Western wouldn’t let up in the second, scoring only two minutes in off of a four-yard run from Finch to extend the purple and white lead to 32 points. Finch would also round out the scoring in the quarter, hitting Brian Marshall on a 36-yard pass to send Western into the half with a 42-3 lead.

Unfortunately for the hometown crowd it would be more of the same in the second half, with Western adding 10 points in the third off of a Garret Sanvido touchdown run and a field goal from Zack Medeiros, followed by 17 points in the fourth from Taylor, Medeiros, and Brazier, to claim a 69-3 victory.

Next up for the Mustangs is an OUA semi-final rematch with the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, October 4. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at TD Stadium, and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv, Rogers Cable 13 in London, and Rogers Sports Plus throughout Ontario. Fans can also listen live on CHRW radio and on Newstalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.

Waterloo loses to Western 2014

WATERLOO Β – The Western Mustangs proved why their one of the best teams in the country by getting on the board early and not looking back. The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in the opening 5:20 of the game on route to a 69-3 victory. The football game was viewed by over 1,200 fans, parents, alumni, and staff on their annual Reunion weekend.

The Warriors, who have had a tough start to the season, were honouring their graduating seniors this game in front of their friends and families.Β Max HillΒ (Fort Erie),Β Daniel Tisi(Fonthill),Β Peter MorganΒ (Guelph ),Β Mike DedysΒ (Mississauga),Β Christian LewisΒ (Kitchener),Β Miklos McMasterΒ (Niagara Falls),Β Thomas DemersΒ (Simcoe)Β and the “real deal”Β Paul CecileΒ (Azilda)Β was among those athletes graduating.

Eight Mustangs had touchdowns in Saturday’s win as the team racked up 753 yards of total offence, while limiting the Warriors to 183 offensive yards. The biggest discrepancy in the game was the Mustangs 401 net yards rushing as compared to Waterloo’s 46 yards.

Western opened the scoring early in the game, scoring on their first possession on a three-yard run from Yannick Harou. Warriors pivotΒ Jamie CookΒ (Collingwood)Β would throw an interception to start off the following drive and this would lead to a touchdown by George Johnson; putting the Warriors down 14-0 early in the game.

Western would add another major on a three-yard run from Garret Sanvido at the 8:39 mark of the first quarter to put the game out of reach early. The Warriors lone tally would come four minutes later asΒ Caleb GirardΒ (Waterford)Β would hit an impressive 41-yard field goal to get Waterloo’s only points of the game. Mustangs’ Matt McDougall would add a TD late to run out the first quarter 28-3 for the purple and white.

Touchdowns would come later from Will Finch, Brian Marshall, Sanvido, Alex Taylor and Matt Brazier while Zach Medeiros added two field goals. The final score would be 69-3 in what was a lopsided contest.

Mike DedysΒ (Mississauga)Β andΒ Danny SilvestriΒ (Waterloo)Β earned the Crimestoppers players-of-the-game for the Warriors. Dedys was the Warriors best receiver in gaining difficult yards, catching for 88 yards yards on the day while Silvestri rushed for tough yards on the day in a role as a quiet leader.

The Warriors have concluded their home games and will travel to Ottawa next Saturday to take on the 2-3 Gee-Gees. You can stream the Warriors on the road at oua.tv.

Golden Hawks Homecoming win 2014

WATERLOO  – In a showdown between a pair of 2-1 football teams, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks made a statement in their annual Homecoming game as they defeated the Carleton Ravens 53-3 on Saturday at University Stadium.

Meeting for the first time since Laurier Homecoming in 1970, a game that was also won by the Hawks, the purple and gold put on a show for their fans as they racked up 521 yards of offence to move to 3-1 on the season.

β€œYou’re never quite sure coming off a bye week [how your team will react],” commented head coachΒ Michael Fauldsafter the victory. β€œWe tried to keep our schedule as close to normal as we could and our guys came out and played. Offence, defence, special teams all played really well.”

Leading the way once again for the Hawks was running backΒ Dillon CampbellΒ of Whitby, Ont. The leading rusher in the CIS added another 176 yards and three touchdowns to his season totals, brining him 850 yards and eight touchdowns through four games in 2014.

QuarterbackΒ James FracasΒ of Waterloo, Ont., had another efficient day as he completed 14-of-19 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were to receiverΒ Anthony PizzutiΒ of Hamilton. Pizzuti finished the afternoon with 51 yards on four catches.

β€œWe’re a really balanced offence,” added Faulds. β€œEveryone knows our headliner isΒ Dillon Campbell, but Fracas is doing such a great job, he still hasn’t thrown an interception on the year, [and] he’s spreading the ball around. You saw Marcus [Arkarakas] had some catches, Pizutti had some catches, he’s doing a really good job being the facilitator. β€œ

For the second straight game, Laurier’s defence also shone as they held the Ravens to just three points on the afternoon. Defensive backΒ Chris AckieΒ of Cambridge, Ont., anchored the strong defensive effort by recording 5.5 tackles.

β€œWe’re just more focused,” said Ackie on how the Hawks have now allowed just three points in the last two games. β€œWe had a big win Week 1 against U of T, against Windsor we came in too light, so now we really buckled down, stayed focus and did what we needed to do today.”

Featured in the OUA’s Marquee Matchup for the second time this season, the Hawks came flying out of the gate, albeit with a little luck on their side. After their opening drive was stalled on Carleton’s 34-yard line, a botched snap on the field goal attempt ended up in the hands ofΒ Ronnie PfefferΒ of Kitchener, Ont. The fourth year kicker scrambled 32 yards for the first down, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run from Campbell to stake Laurier to a 7-0 lead.

After a Pfeffer field goal gave the Hawks a 10-0 lead through the opening quarter, Laurier’s offence exploded in the second quarter. Campbell opened the frame with his second touchdown run of the game, followed by an 8-yard touchdown from Pizzuti on the purple and gold’s next possession.

Before the quarter was out, Pizzuti had his second touchdown of the day, this time a 5-yard catch and Pfeffer added his second field goal of the afternoon to stake the Hawks to a 34-0 halftime advantage.

The third quarter was more of the same from the offence asΒ Marcus ArkarakasΒ of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Campbell each added a major, extending the lead to 48-0.

From there, Faulds removed his starters from the game and Laurier cruised to their fifth all-time victory over Carleton.

β€œIt felt amazing,” said Pizzuti on the win in front of the Homecoming crowd. β€œWe had thousands of fans coming out and it felt good to make a stance, really, for the OUA and for our fans. It’s not just for us, we love them coming out and supporting us.”

The lone bright spot on the day for the Ravens was the play of linebacker Leon Cerenini of La Salle, Man., who had 12.5 tackles to lead all players.

The victory moved Laurier into a tie with the Guelph Gryphons for fourth place in the OUA. As for the Ravens, they fall to 2-2 on the year, seventh in the conference.

Up next for the Hawks, they will wrap up a three-game homestand when they host the York Lions (0-5) on Saturday, October 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

NOTES: Pfeffer’s 15-point effort on the afternoon moved him into third place on Laurier’s all-time scoring list with 227 career points…Campbell’s 850 yards rushing so far in 2014 is just 17 yards behind his total of 867 from 2013 when he led the conference…Fracas continued his incredible season that sees him leading the OUA in completion percentage at 72.5 while throwing nine touchdowns and zero interceptions, the best ratio in the conference…the Hawks are now 5-2-1 against the Ravens, with the seven previous meetings coming between 1963 and 1970…attendance at the game was 7,370

Gee-Gees win over Blues 2014

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team fell 41-25 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their 999th game in program history on Saturday, September 27 at Varsity Centre.
Β
With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-4, while the Gee-Gees improve to 3-2 after Week 5 of OUA football action.
Β
Blues quarterback Simon Nassar (Toronto) was 17-of-33 for 218 yards, while second-year running back Lukas Gavac (Mississauga) rushed 22 times for 165 yards and one major. Veteran receiver Kevin Bradfield had seven receptions for 98 yards, with fellow Toronto native Llevi Noel adding three catches for 57 yards on the day.
Β
Third-year defensive back Jaiden McBride of Whitby, Ont., led the team with seven tackles and one sack, while Brittley Mokube (Brampton, Ont.) had six tackles in the loss.
Β
Ottawa rookie Jackson Bennett got the Gee-Gees off to a great start, returning Eric Hewitson’s opening kickoff 101 yards for the game’s first major. Second-year kicker Lewis Ward (Kingston, Ont.) added a 21-yard field goal and Ottawa’s Bryce Vieira (Montreal) added a 27-yard rushing touchdown to give the visiting team a 17-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of action.
Β
The Gee-Gees extended their lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Derek Wendel (Belleville, Ont.) connected a 24-yard pass with third-year receiver Ben Fisher (Kingston, Ont.). That capped off a four-play, 90-yard drive as Ottawa took a 24-point lead.
Β
The Blues got on the board on the ensuing drive. Gavac and receiver Rahul Madan rallied the troops down the field and back-up quarterback Marcus Hobbs (Mississauga) came in to finish it off with a one-yard rushing major.
Β
Toronto seemed to build off that drive and energy when, with less than three minutes to go in the first half, Domenic Battistella (Maple, Ont.) blocked an Ottawa punt attempt and rookie running back Divante Smith (Mississauga) was there to pick it up and run it into the end zone.
Β
The Gee-Gees were able to block the extra point and added one more score off a seven-yard Mitchell Baines reception. Ottawa led 31-13 at halftime.
Β
Ottawa padded their lead after Greg Cherniak blocked a Toronto punt and Samuel Rupcic was there to gain possession. Wendel then ran it one-yard into the end zone.
Β
Toronto responded as Nassar connected with Noel for a 43-yard gain, which set up a three-yard rushing touchdown from Gavac, his fifth of the season. The Blues trailed 38-20 heading into the final frame.
Β
Hewitson kicked a 28-yard field goal on Toronto’s first drive of the fourth and Ottawa conceded a safety to bring the Blues within 13 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game, but that was all that the Blues could muster. Lewis Ward added a 31-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining to round out the scoring.
Β
Wendel was 26-of-32 for 334 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing eight times for 47 yards and one major. Ben Fisher tallied 138 yards and one touchdown on five receptions, while Vierira rushed 12 times for 105 yards and one major. Nick Lecour led all players with 14 tacklesΒ  in the win.
Β
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 4 as they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens in what will be their 1000th game in program history. The game will be streamed live on OUA.tv, beginning at 1 p.m.

Windsor defeats York 2014

The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 35-3 by the visiting Windsor Lancers in the team’s annual night game at York Stadium on Friday (Sept. 26).
Β
With the win, the Lancers improved their record to 4-0 on the year and moved into a tie for first place in the OUA standings. It marks the first time they have been 4-0 since 1987. The loss dropped the Lions to 0-5 on the season.
Β
The Lions’ defence stood tall for much of the first half, holding the Lancers’ offence to just a pair of field goals by Anthony Malandruccolo (Windsor, Ont.) until there was just 1:20 left, when receiver Evan Pszczonak (Amherstburg, Ont.) scored a touchdown on a 60-yard pass from quarterback Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) to give Windsor a 17-0 lead.
Β
The other points in the first half came on a pair of York-conceded safeties.
Β
The Lancers added another touchdown, this time on the ground by Nathan O’Halloran (Amherstburg, Ont.), early in the third quarter, and got their third major of the day on another 60-yard bomb by Kennedy to O’Halloran in the fourth.
Β
The Lions scored their lone points of the game on aΒ Nick NaylorΒ (Abbotsford, B.C.) field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Β
Kennedy finished 27-of-47 for 406 yards, with the two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Pszczonak was the team’s leading receiver with 152 yards on eight catches.
Β
York rookie running backΒ Jonathan HowardΒ (Burlington, Ont.) had his best game with the Lions, putting up 98 yards on just eight carries, including an impressive 40-yard carry that set up the field goal.
Β
On defence, rookie cornerbackΒ Ian LawrenceΒ (Paris, Ont.) was also tremendous, recording six tackles, two pass break-ups and an impressive pick of a Kennedy throw. Third-year linebackerΒ Nikita StarchenkoΒ (Whitby, Ont.) was stellar for the second straight week, leading the Lions with 7.5 tackles, including two for a loss of five yards.
Β
The Lions will head back out on the road next week when they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1pm. They won’t play at home again until Week 9 on Saturday, Oct. 25 against the Waterloo Warriors.Β
