Quebec City – Sell out crowd of 17, 123 saw the Rouge et or open their season with a big statement over the Montreal Carabins. The 66th straight home victory was orchestrated by two rookies on offense.
First year quarterback Hugo Richard led the way with 371 yards on 23 completions from 31 attempts. He ended the game with three touchdown passes. “”Hugo played with exceptional poise. He knew for a while that he would be starting his first college game, against the Carabins to boot. He showed that he has a bright future here, ” said head coach Glen Constantine.
“I was very nervous, but I am always like that. I think it went well. I could complete more passes, I will improve this aspect. The offense as a whole was very good tonight, ” said the young quarterback.
The Rouge et or went down early 7 to 1 but did not panic. Following the Carabins touchdown Richard orchestrated a 84 yard touchdown drive, going 5 for 6, culminating in a Felix Lechasseur touchdown. The Rouge et or took a 20 to 8 lead into halftime.
The second half saw the home team extend its lead with touchdowns by Julian Bailey and Felix Faubert-Lussier. Another rookie, Chris Amoah, led the ground attack with 78 yards on 18 carries. On defense, Jean-Philippe Bolduc had a good evening with six solo tackles and one assisted. Defensive lineman Vincent Desloges for his part had 4.5 tackles, including two quarterback sacks.
Carabins head coach Danny Maciocia had these comments about the game. “We started the game well, but then made costly mistakes, including two turnovers, which we can not afford against a powerful team.”
