MONTREAL —Β Francois DessureaultΒ passed for 291 yards, a pair of touchdowns and ran for another TD as the visiting Concordia Stingers defeated McGill 41-7 in RSEQ conference football, Friday, to capture the 46th annual Shaughnessy Cup game before 3,131 at Molson Stadium.
Place-kickerΒ Keegan TreloarΒ added 15 points, converting all three Concordia majors and going 4-for-4 in field-goals from distances of 15, 24, 42 and 43.
It was a disappointing result for the injury-plagued Redmen (0-2), who were missing five starters with injuries. They fell behind 19-0 after the opening stanza, then trailed 23-7 at the half and 31-7 after three quarters. Concordia, which improved to 2-0 after going winless last year, had 381 net yards of offence and 19 first downs, compared to 220 and 18, respectively, by the Redmen. The game featured a plethora of flags, with a combined 30 penalties for a whopping 225 yards of real estate.
The result avenged a two-game McGill sweep last year — including a 32-19 Redmen victory in last year’s Shaughnessy Cup affair — and evened their lifetime record against each other at 37-37, with McGill maintaining a 20-15 edge at Molson Stadium. In Shaughnessy Cup play, the Redmen are 23-22-1 overall, including an 18-22 record against Concordia and an unblemished 5-0-1 against Loyola. The cross-town rivals will meet once again, in the 28th annual Montreal Shrine Bowl at Concordia on Nov. 1.
Other Stinger TDs were scored byΒ Jean-Christophe BennyΒ — on a seven-yard toss from Dessureault, which gave the visitors a 10-0 lead at 6:05 of the first quarter — andΒ Daniel Skube, who snared a 34-yard pass from his pivot to make it 38-7 midway through the final quarter. Dessureault completed 16 of 33 passes and rushed six times for 33 yards.
McGill, which had poor field position for much of the game, conceded four safeties. The lone Redmen TD was scored byΒ Louis Brouillette, a third-year receiver from Sherbrooke, Que., who led his troops with 78 yards on eight receptions, including a six-yard catch from starting quarterbackΒ Dallon KuprowskiΒ at 6:01 of the second stanza, narrowing the deficit to 21-7.
Kuprowski, a senior from Saskatoon, completed 13 of 24 attempts for 122 yards and one interception. He was relieved in the second half by freshmanΒ Joel HouleΒ of Chateauguay, Que., who went 12-for-25 for 113 yards.
McGill (0-2) travels across town next week for a challenging matchup against No.4-ranked Montreal (1-1) on Sept. 19, while Concordia (2-0) will host Sherbroooke (1-0) the same day.
REDMEN RAP:Β Yannick Langelier-Vanasse, a receiver and return specialist, led McGill with 117 all-purpose yards on 11 touches… Among the five McGill starters scratched from the previous week was prime receiverΒ Jean-Philippe Paquette, who was nursing an unspecified injury suffered in Sherbrooke… DLΒ Devon StewartΒ led the Redmen defence with 7.5 tackles… LBΒ Karl ForguesΒ registered 7 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, in addition to a forced fumble and a knockdown… The Shaughnessy Cup is a local rivalry matchup named after the legendaryΒ Frank Shaughnessy, a member of the McGill Sports Hall of Fame who coached at both McGill and Loyola College, which later became Concordia. Shaughnessy, a football innovator who led McGill to a pair of Yates Cup championships in 1913 and 1919, first introduced the forward pass to Canada in a 1921 McGill game against Syracuse at Molson Stadium and lobbied for a decade before the Canadian Rugby Football Union formally adopted the pass in 1931.
