RECAP: Vert & Or leave injury-plagued Redmen feeling black & blue [stats]

MONTREAL — Jeremy Roch passed for three touchdowns as the visiting Sherbrooke Vert & Or dampen McGill Homecoming Week with a 45-0 whitewash over the Redmen at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

It was Sherbrooke’s first shutout since a 44-0 home-field victory over St. FX on Oct. 20, 2007 and marked the first time that the Redmen had been blanked in 17 games, dating back to a 44-0 road loss to the Montreal Carabins, Oct. 20, 2012

Sherbrooke, which improved to 3-3 in the RSEQ conference, generated 29 first downs and 524 yards of net offence. They led 14-0 after the opening quarter, 15-0 at halftime and 29-0 after three.

The injury-plagued Redmen, who fell to 0-6, fielded a 48-man dress roster composed of 25 first-year players, including 19 true freshmen. They managed only 14 first downs and 144 yards.

Roch completed 14 of 22 passes for 182 yards before giving way to understudy Mathieu Loranger in the final stanza. Roch connected with three different receivers for touchdowns, namely Guillaume Racine-Tessier (a 14-yard TD reception), Guillaume Paquet (a 25-yard effort) and Sebastien Blanchard (a 16-yarder).

Loranger hooked up with receiver Alexandre Aube for a five-yard TD toss early in the final quarter to make the score 36-0. Running back Isaac Lauzon scampered in from five yards out for a late TD to round out the major scoring.

Kicker Mathieu Hebert added nine points, including a 17-yard field-goal, to go along with a 42-yard punt single and five conversions. The rest of the scoring came on three safety touches conceded by McGill.

With two games remaining, Sherbrooke (3-3) solidified their grip on the fourth and final playoff berth in the six-team Quebec conference. They sit  four points ahead of Bishop’s (1-4), who play at No.1-ranked  Laval (5-0) on Sunday.

The Redmen will host Laval on Oct. 24.
