RECAP: Wildcats unleash against Colts, Broncos & Rams remain undefeated

The following are recaps from this past weekend’s action in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL).

The Prairie Football Conference (PFC) finally kicked off the season over the weekend with a full slate of games.Β  The Regina Thunder, Edmonton Wildcats and Edmonton Huskies each tasted victories in Week 1.

The Game of the Week was in Regina as the Thunder hosted the Saskatoon Hilltops in a rematch of last year’s PFC final and the game was as advertised.Β  The Thunder winning in overtime 19-16.

With quarterback Asher Hastings moving to McMaster University, it left a big hole on the offensive side.Β  Insert Regina native and form Vancouver Island Raider QB Jaeden Marwick.Β  The pivot completed 29 of 42 for 363 yards and two touchdowns, spreading ball to six different receivers.

Preston Bews hauled in six passes for a game high 84 yards and a score, while Matt Frass caught the game winning touchdown pass in overtime.Β  Kasim Ocaya made a game high seven receptions for 80 yards.

The ground game was frustrated against a very good Hilltops defense, compiling just 44 yards.Β  Justin Banin carried eight times for 23 yards.

Defensively the Thunder were led by Mason Dick and Brett Selinger who each had four tackles.Β  Chris Tunnicliffe had a pair of knock downs and Michael Desjarlais assisted on five stops.

The Thunder (1-0) will stay and home on Sunday and host the Edmonton Wildcats (1-0) at 1:00pm.

The Saskatoon Hilltops showed their run game will be dominating once again this year despite the graduation of Andre Lalonde.Β  On Sunday afternoon they rushed for 254 yards on 32 carries.Β  Wayndel Lewis led the charge with 18 rushes for 116 yards and a score.

Quarterback Jared Andreychuk finished the game six of 20 for 115 yards in his first game as the #1 starter following the graduation of Matt Karpinka.Β Β  Evan Kopchynski caught one ball for 58 yards, while Davis Mitchell hauled in two passes for 26 yards.

Linebacker Justin Filteau forced the game’s lone turnover, intercepting a pass to add to his four solo tackles.Β  Blake Hermann recorded two sacks and Cole Benkic and Dillon Buckle shared one.

The Hilltops (0-1) will host the Edmonton Huskies (1-0) on Sunday at 1:00pm in their home opener.

The PFC season officially kicked off on Saturday evening when the Calgary Colts hosted and fell to the Edmonton Wildcats 36-16.

Wildcats quarterback Jordon Olson completed 15 of 36 for 214 yards and threw two touchdowns.Β Β Β  His favourite target was veteran Brad Quartel who caught eight passes for a game high 118 yards.Β Β  Rocky Borrelli and Chase Nahrebeski collected the Olson touchdown passes.

After sitting out last season due to an injury the 2012 CJFL Rookie of the Year Jordan Samoil returned with eight carries for a game high 48 yards.Β  Anthony Myroon ran seven times for 28 yards and Nahrebeski rumbled three yards on two carries and scored a major.

The Cats Special Teams also got on the board in the third quarter as Jahlani Knorren scampered 80 yards for a touchdown in his first PFC game.Β  Knorren was the Langley Rams quarterback of the BCFC last season.

Defensively the Wildcats held the Colts to 46 yards on the ground and forced two turnovers as Luc Catellier and Knorren picked off a pass.Β  Catellier also led the club with five tackles, while Mike Hansen chipped in with three.

The Wildcats (1-0) will stay on the road and play in Regina on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm against the Thunder (1-0) in the PFC Game of the Week.

Following their loss on Saturday the Calgary Colts are still looking for their first win since 2012, after a winless 2013.

Although the run game collected just 46 yards, the Colts did score twice on the ground.Β  Both Cam Fox and Cole Meyer found pay dirt.

Through the air, two different quarterbacks found six different receivers.Β  Brett Hunchuk completed nine of 21 for 126 yards, while Meyer was seven of 17 for 102 yards.Β  Their favourite target was Fox who hauled in eight catches for 90 yards.Β  Cole Bazinet made two catches for 50 yards.

On the defensive side Jakub Jakoubek had a game high six tackles.Β  Keiko King, Colton Burr and Chris Friesen had a solid game with four stops each and Dylan Niedermaier intercepted a pass.

The Colts (0-1) hit the road and play in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon against the Rifles (0-1).

The Edmonton Huskies used six field goals on Sunday afternoon to win their first of the season, 25-15 in Winnipeg.

Jonathan Heidebrecht was a perfect 6-6 and connected on a convert to account for 19 of the Huskies 25 points.

Offensively the Huskies tallied 452 yards as quarterback Trevor Edrmann was 15 of 32 for 263 yards and threw a touchdown.Β Β Β  Yannick L’Abbe was his target of choice hauling in five balls for a game high 126 yards and the only touchdown.Β  Colton Balicki also caught five passes for 80 yards.

On the ground Brandon Stewart was the main man.Β  He carried a game high 20 times for 117 yards.

Defensively Daniel Loggale intercepted two passes and made a pair of tackles and Chase Paylor and Brandt Kolybaba each had six tackles.

The Huskies (1-0) stay on the road and travel to Saskatoon to take on the Hilltops (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.

Sunday afternoon started a new era with a new uniforms and a new quarterback in Winnipeg but it wasn’t the result the Rifles were hoping for.

Tyler Vieira takes over the #1 pivot spot after a graduating Ryan Marsch and finished nine of 17 for 124 yards, but threw two interceptions.Β  He did show off some terrific scrambling skills by rushing six times for 28 yards and scored a touchdown.

The veteran Kurt Goodrich made two catches for 27 yards and he rushed three times for 91 yards and had a touchdown.Β  Julian Banares had three receptions for 26 yards.

On the defensive side, the Rifles were led by Braedy Will and his Conference high seven tackles.Β  Jason Kelly had three tackles and a pick, while Brooks Falloon also had an interception.Β  Joshua Onyebuchi chipped in with five tackles.

The Rifles (0-1) will now host the Calgary Colts (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.

 

BCFC WEEK 4:

In Week 4 of the BCFC season, the Kamloops Broncos and Langley Rams remain undefeated, while the Okanagan Sun swept their home and home with the Raiders.

For the first time in their franchise history the Broncos are 3-0 after beating the Valley Huskers 45-15 at Hillside Stadium compiling 550 total yards of offense.

Quarterback Steve Schuweiler finished 16 of 33 for 328 yards and threw four touchdown passes.Β  10 different receivers caught balls on Saturday night led by Devin Csincsa who hauled in five passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.Β  Derek Yachison caught three balls for 87 yards and a score, while Jesse Neufeld also caught a touchdown pass.

The ground attack was led by Jacob Palmarin who rushed 10 times for 113 yards and back-up quarterback Connor Whitelaw scored a rushing touchdown.

Defensively the Broncos forced five turnovers including an interception for a touchdown recorded by Mike Ochoa.Β  Brendon Thiessen and Aaron Smit also had interceptions, while Jake Bainas and Jared Poelzer each recovered a fumble.Β  Bainas and Kieran Muir each had five stops.

The Broncos (3-0) will stay at home and face the Okanagan Sun (3-1) on Saturday night at 7:00pm.

Despite the loss the Valley Huskers had their best offensive game, gaining 412 offensive yards.Β  Two quarterbacks were used in Dylan LaPrairie and RJ Begg each threw for over 100 yards.Β  LaPrairie, the former Bronco, made his first start at Hillside Stadium and finished nine of 18 for 164 yards but threw three picks.Β  Begg completed eight of 11 for 102 yards and threw an interception.

Feiix Kaanon was the Huskers top receiver, catching five balls for a game high 95 yards.Β Β  Blake Draper and Cody Vinish each hauled in three passes.

The Huskers did have some success on the ground led by Benedict Muhima who carried a Conference high 15 times for 121 yards.Β  Begg rushed three times and collected a major.

Kicker Dan Erickson was 2-2 in field goal attempts connecting from 20 and 25 yards out.

The Huskers defense did force three turnovers as Jeffery Hayden and Cody Parray intercepted passes and Owen Roche recovered a fumble.Β  Jason Ghag had a team high six tackles and Billy Collins and Mike Weins both had a sack.

Next weekend the Huskers (0-4) stay on the road and will face Rebels (1-3) in Westshore.The other remaining undefeated team the Langley Rams scored 75 points on route to their third consecutive win, despite setting a new BCFC record with 280 penalty yards, getting whistled 26 times.

The Rams Special Teams played an enormous role in their 75-16 victory.Β  Returner John Beckerleg returned two kick-offs for touchdowns tying a BCFC and CJFL record for most kick-off returns for touchdowns.Β  The two against the Rebels now give Beckerleg three on the season, tying a BCFC and CJFL record for kick-off returns for touchdowns in a single season.Β  He also returned a punt 60 yards for a major.

Offensively quarterback Dylan Tucker was a perfect 10 of 10 for 352 yards and threw five touchdown passes.Β  Malcolm Williams caught five passes for 152 yards and three scores, while Dan English made three receptions for 132 yards and caught two touchdown passes.

On the ground, the Rams pounded nine different ball carriers. Mario Narte rushed four times for a team high 49 yards and Tucker rushed for the lone ground touchdown.

On the Rams β€œD” Clovis Lumeka made four tackles, while Beckerleg also intercepted a pass for the lone turnover and Shaiheem Charles-Brown had two quarterback sacks,

The Rams (3-0) will travel to Nanaimo on Saturday and face the Vancouver Island Raiders (1-3) at 4:00pm.

The Westshore Rebels offense sputtered on Saturday afternoon, gaining just 234 total yards.

Quarterback Hunter Lake completed 19 of 38 for 222 yards and threw two touchdowns.Β Β Β  His favourite target was Griffin Dear who caught five passes for 36 yards.Β  Nathan Leader made four receptions for 59 yards.Β  Josh Beauchamp and Nick Spindor caught Lake’s touchdown passes.

With Chris Pastro the Rebels shorthanded defense struggled as Brandon Nelms led the way with four tackles.Β Β  Tyler Leader blocked a kick.

The Rebels (1-3) will host the Valley Huskers (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

For the first time since 2005 the Okanagan Sun left the Island with a victory over the Vancouver Island Raiders, blasting them 64-20.

The Sun offense compiled a Conference high 693 net offensive yards including 411 through the air.Β  Quarterback Cam Bedore finished three quarters 18 of 24 for 351 yards and threw four touchdown passes.Β  Kyle Patchell caught three of those scores and had a career day, catching eight passes for 219 yards. Lerone Robinson made six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

The ground assault was potent as well gaining 295 yards.Β  Dillon Fortune led the charge with six carries for 126 yards and a score.Β  Kory Nagata chipped in with five rushes for 59 yards.

Robbie Yochim retuned one punt, one yard and set a new BCFC record for most punt returns in a career, now with 132.Β Β  He surpassed former Ram Nick Downey.

The Sun defense was solid, forcing five turnovers on downs and Nick Schroeder picked off a pass.Β Β  Four different players each recorded three tackles and four sacks.Β Β  Brennan Van Nistelrooy, Cord Delinte, Zac Ironstand and Jonas Gering each brought down the Raiders QB.

The Sun (3-1) will play their fourth road game of the season on Saturday night when they face the Kamloops Broncos (3-0) in the BCFC Game of the Week.
The Vancouver Island Raiders celebrated their 10th anniversary home opener on Saturday afternoon, but the Sun spoiled the party.

Despite the loss the Raiders passing game was solid gaining 379 yards on the arm strength of quarterback Liam O’Brien.Β  The first year starter completed 21 of 26 passes and threw two touchdown passes. Dustin Rodriguez caught two passes on the afternoon, including the longest play from scrimmage, a 95 yards touchdown reception.Β  Arthur Fabbero collected eight passes for 124 yards, while Marshall Cook made six catches for 72 yards and a score.

The ground game is where the Raiders are struggling, gaining just 47 yards.Β  Nathan Berg did score a rushing touchdown, but on eight carries he gained 18 yards,

Defensively the Raiders didn’t force a turnover.Β  Brendan Lattimar sacked the QB and Tyler Harvey and Colton Copp shared a sack.Β  Lattimar and Dan Dubinski each led the club with four tackles.

The Raiders (1-3) will look to turn their worst start in franchise history around on Saturday afternoon when the host the Langley Rams (3-0) at 4:00pm.
