The Thunderbirds went out of the country with their latest pick. Texan, Derek Engel, is excited to come to Canada and learn the Canadian game.
Derek chose UBC because they were the first school to offer him a scholarship. “I took that very seriously since they were the first ones it meant that they really wanted me and I felt wanted as well,” he explains. “Being from Texas I feel like going to Canada will be a great experience for me. I was able to recently get my Canadian citizenship as well since my mom is a citizen.” Derek also mentioned UBC has great academics and that made his decision easy.
In university, Derek will be taking Applied Sciences (Engineering).
Derek played high school football in Grapevine, Texas. He came from a 5a school, where there were 2,500 or more students. Derek has recently started his transition from the American game to the Canadian game. “I have learnt the rules and bought a Canadian sized football to throw,” he says.
This past year Derek was injured in the first game of the season and tore his lateral meniscus in his left knee. He missed the whole season and was completely cleared this past week. Derek states, “I have taken drops since then and have been throwing constantly before then. I am ready to play some ball!”
Derek currently weighs in at 6’4, 205lbs. He signed with UBC on November 12, 2020.
