Rick Foley signs with the Lions

The free agent defensive end Rick Foley, has agreed to terms with the BC Lions on a contract for the remainder of the season and becomes the newest addition in a string of successful sing-ups.

A veteran of a thousand battles and probably not in his best shape, but the required experience to help improve a defensive line that has some weak points when placing pressure on rival quarterbacks. The Lion’s defense is tied for 5th in the CFL with 13 sacks, that’s a dozen behind the rival Toronto Argonauts.

His leadership will also be welcome to groom young players like Josh Shirley, Junior Luke and Maxx Forde. For the moment the Lions maintain a strong comeback with its powerful and fast offense.

Player Profile

Foley is native from Courtice, Ontario. His successful career, the one that took him to the top of the CFL and then to a not so successful season in the NFL, began here with the Lions. The four seasons spent accrued a Grey Cup in 2006, reaching an incredible climax in 2009 where he accomplished 47 defensive tackles, 1 sack and won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Award.

The 2009 season skyrocketed Foley who got a trial season with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. It didn´t work out as expected and by 2010 the New York Jets quickly picked the player for a second chance on the American professional league.

Soon enough Foley found himself playing back at his homeland with the Argonauts, giving a productive season in 2011 with 66 defensive tackles, six sacks and an interception. In 2012 he won with the Argonauts the Grey Cup, winning once more the game’s Most Outstanding Canadian.

Foley’s career didn´t halt there, proving he is a master of the national league. In 2013 he made a short move for the Saskatchewan and won once more the Grey Cup.

In 2015 the Argonauts got him back and has player there until his free agent release in March of 2017.

The Lions Right Now

The BC Lions defeated the Saskatchewan this past Saturday August 5th. The key element for their victory was Lulay’s methodical and intelligent reading of the game with an offensive landslide. The 33 year old veteran completed 19 of 28 passes for 338 yards and a touchdown for a final 30-15 score.

Williams was also a key element for the victory, the receiver would finish with just 3 catches for 75 yards, but confused the rival defense lines with double coverage and buying up time and space for other receivers. It was a masterpiece of divide and conquer.

The new acquisition for the Lions is disrupting the style of play with his speed and stamina. The Lions signed Williams in the off season for that very reason. The 5 foot-9, 155 pound speeder managed 77 receptions for 1,246 yards and 10 touchdowns in 14 games with the Ottawa Redblacks in the previous season and averaged 16.2 yards per catch. The 29 year old from New Mexico also has 575 total yards after reception to prove his level of skill and physical endurance.

“Speed kills and it’s awesome to have him on our lineup”, said player Burnham. “He stretches the field and brings a whole new element to our game. We’re so use to having big and physical receivers and to have him completely changes the game.”
