Ethan has played for the Cochrane Lions for the past eight years, starting off as an atom and moving on through the ranks of peewee and bantam as a defensive back. His bantam years were the most successful; he took home a Tier 3 provincial championship two years ago and was also named a Calgary Minor Football All-Star this season.

The championship game, played on a frozen field in Bonnyville, Alberta, was one of Ethan’s most memorable as a Lion.

“It went back and forth the entire game and they had the ball with a minute left,” Ethan recalls. “Our defense made a few nice plays and with thirty seconds left we had a fumble recovery to seal the win.”

The final score was 27 to 21.

This past spring, Ethan represented South Alberta in the Bantam Bowl, which took place in Edmonton. Team South won the game for the third straight year.

“The most exciting thing was bringing all we had practiced for those few days and testing them against a really good team,” Ethan says.

In the fall, Ethan will be playing for his high school junior team, the Cochrane High School Cobras.

“My dad has been coaching the team for a long time,” he says,  “So I have grown up around the team.”

“To finally be able to play for them will be exciting.”

Though his university career is still years away, Ethan has already put some thought into where he would like to go after high school.

“If I had to choose I think I would look to the University of Calgary,” he says. “It is a great football program and is also close to home.” Ethan also has the added advantage of an insiders’ perspective on the CIS team. “My brother is on the Dinos right now and has told me what a great program it is.”

Ethan is also looking into what subjects he might want to study in university.

“I have always excelled at math and science and I think engineering would be very interesting,” he says.

While he has enjoyed a summer of basketball and golf, Ethan is looking forward to his next task: making a splash in high school as a Cochrane Cobra.
