Ross leads mounties to victory over axemen (stats)

(Wolfville, NS) The Mount Allison Mounties improved to 3-3 and join a three-way deadlock for first place with a 20-7 win over the Acadia Axemen, spoiling the Homecoming celebrations for the 1,425 fans in attendance at Raymond Field in Wolfville, NS.

The Mounties held the lead for the entire game, opening the scoring on a 17-yard Jon Szilagyi field goal that capped an eight-play, 69-yard drive off of the opening kickoff.

Mount Allison widened the gap to a ten-point lead at 10:25 of the second quarter when running back Alonzo Howell capped a 36-yard drive with a one yard dive for the first major of the game. Howell had 17 carries on the day for 103 of the Mountie 237 net yards rushing.

The visiting Mounties stretched the lead to 17 unanswered points late in the third quarter when pivot Jake Hotchkiss threw a ball on a rope to fourth year receiver Ben Stehr for Mount Allison’s final touchdown of the day.

Acadia finally responded to the 17-0 deficit at the midway point of the third frame when quarterback Kyle Graves found a wide open Scott Kelly on a seam route that covered 31 yards for the touchdown run after the catch.

The scoring ended at 7:34 in the final quarter on a 27-yard Szilagyi field goal.

The win split the season series between the two teams, but the Mounties now hold the tie-breaker over the Axemen should they end up in a tie in the standings at the end of the season. The Axemen defeated the Mounties by seven points last weekend in Sackville, but today’s 14-point margin of victory for Mount Allison gives them a plus-7 advantage in point differential in head-to-head play which is the next tie-breaker.

Reigning AUS Most Outstanding Player Gary Ross had a team-high 83 yards in receiving on four catches while teammate Alonzo Howell led Mount Allison with 103 yards on the ground. Ross was held to 93 yards on seven punt returns but posted 212 all-purpose yards and was named the Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Graves had a game-high 107 yards rushing and threw for 220 yards in the air, completing 18-of-37 attempts with two interceptions.

Mount Allison edged Acadia 369 to 367 in net offensive yards.

Acadia’s Tom Labenski led the game with 9 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, two forced fumbles and one quarterback sack for a four yard loss. Mountie Matt Thomson led the defense with five solos and five assisted tackles.

The 3-3 Axemen head on a road trip in week seven to Antingonish to take on the last place StFX X-Men (1-5) while Mount Allison (3-3) visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies (3-3) who are riding a three game winning streak.
