Rouge et Or remain undefeated (VIDEO)

Laval Β – Laval Rouge et Or won the battle at the top of RSEQ as the team defeated the Montreal Carabins by Β a score of 16-9 on Sunday afternoon in front of Β 16, 210 fans at Laval University’s Telus Stadium.

In a hard fought game, the Rouge et Or got they 60th consecutive win on their home field.Β  The team has not lost since September 2004.

“Defensively, we did not give any points, special teams did a great job and the offense as well,” said Rouge et Or’s Head Coach Glen Constantin.Β  β€œI am very happy with the collective effort.”

“Montreal has given Β us good opposition over the years, and this was one.”

Starting on the heels

In the first quarter, the Carabins imposed their rhythm. The Carabins offense progressed well, but each time, Β the Laval defensive front resisted. The Rouge et Or conceded a safety to the Carabins and after 15 minutes it was 2-0.

The trend was reversed in the second quarter. The Carabins defense excelled, preventing the Rouge et Or. However, the Carabins would concede two safeties with beautiful land position offered by special teams unit and Boris Bede’s punt.

The only touchdown of the half occurred on a Boris Bede field goal attempt from 37 yards. The ball missed the post, and the Carabins Antoine Pruneau sped 119 yards for the major. At halftime, the Carabins were ahead 9-4. It was also the first time since October 2006 that the Rouge et Or trailed in a Β game played on the field.

The Rouge et Or attack returned on the ground as they found themselves in a good position in the middle of the third quarter, but Pascal Lochard fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Carabins.

However on the very next series, Luka Ricard blocked the Carabin attempt and Laval and knocked on the door.

Tristan Grenon connected with Felix Faubert-Lussier in the end zone. The two-point conversion was not successful, but the Rouge et Or still took the lead 10-9.

Another turnaround resulted in the Rouge et Or to capitalize on their lead in the fourth quarter. Pressed deep into their territory, Montreal quarterback Gabriel Cousineau got rid of the ball, which ended in the hands of Maximilian Ducap-Kamara. The Rouge et Or took over at the one yard line.

Pascal Lochard carried the ball in the end zone on the next sequence and the Rouge et Or was able to breathe easier with a 16-9 lead. Β Once again, the Rouge et Or missed the two-point conversion attempt to try to widen the margin. This ultimately ended the game.Β  The Rouge et Or who won by a seven point margin will look ahead to their rematch with the Carabins on October 26th.

Rouge et Or quarterback Tristan Grenon had 14 completions in 25 attempts for 147 passing yards and a touchdown. Guillaume Bourassa led on the ground with 107 yards on 13 carries, while rookie Felix Lechasseur was Grenon’s favorite target with four catches for 33 receiving yards.

On defense, Shayne Gauthier registered three solo tackles and seven assisted for a total of 6.5, in addition to a fumble recovery. Edward Godin recorded two forced fumbles and two quarterback sacks.

The Rouge et Or will travel to Lennoxville next Saturday to take on the Bishop’s Gaiters, who are third in the RSEQ conference with a Β 3-1 record. The team will play at home on Sunday, October 6th Β when they host the Concordia Stingers at Β Laval University’s TelusΒ  StadiumΒ  at 1:30pm.

Montreal – The Montreal Carabins were defeated by the Laval Rouge et Or 16-9 at Laval University’s Telus Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The defenses were dominant in this game, which was decided in the last minute.Β  Β Trailing by seven points, the Carabins had one of their best attack sequences of the day with two minutes remaining on the scoreboard. They went down the field to the Rouge et Or’s 20 yard line.Β  However, a fumble by Carabins quarterback Gabriel Cousineau Β was recovered by the Rouge et Or.

The Rouge et Or are undefeated after four games and are now in sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference.Β  The Carabins are in second place with a record of three wins and one loss. Both teams cross paths once again on October 26th at CEPSUMΒ  in their final game of the regular season .

In the second half, the Rouge et Or were a threat. In the third quarter, the Rouge et OrΒ  got to the Carabins five-yard line. However, running back Pascal Lochard fumbled and it was recovered by David Menard. However, the Rouge et Or blocked the Carabins punt to get a second chance. Tristan Grenon then threw a nine yard touchdown pass to Felix Faubert-Lussier. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but the Rouge et Or took a 10-9 lead.

“That blocked punt was a turning point in the game,” said head coach Danny Maciocia. β€œAgainst a big team like Rouge et Or, it is the kind of play that can make a difference.”

β€œWe have a good group and I am confident that we can correct our mistakes. It reminded us a lesson in this game. You have to play for 60 minutes.”

The Carabins could not overtake the lead. Β An interception by Maximilian Ducap began the drive that led to the Rouge et Or’s second touchdown with a little over two minutes remaining in the game. The one-yard run by Pascal Lochard that followed gave the Rouge et Or a 16-9 lead.

Cousineau, who played the entire game, finished the day with 19 completions in 38 attempts for 213 passing yards. Receiver Mikhail Davidson had Β 99 yards on four receptions. On the ground, rookie Sean Thomas Erlington had 53 yards on 11 carries.

At halftime, the Carabins led the game due to the efforts of Antoine Pruneau. Pruneau grabbed the ball and spun 119 yards for a touchdown with 3:16 to play in the second quarter to give the Carabins a 9-4 lead.Β  The last time the Rouge et Or trailed at halftime Β was October 15, 2006 against the Concordia Stingers. Against the Carabins, it was September 10th of the same year.

The Carabins dominated the first quarter of the game, leading 110-9 in offensive yards.Β Β  However, the team led 2-0 as the result of the Rouge et Or conceding a safety at the end of their first possession. In the end, the home team took the 337-283 advantage in offensive yards. Alex Cromer-Emond and Byron Archambault registered ten tackles a piece. Cromer-Emond recorded one of four Carabins sacks on the day.Β  Β Archambault also caused a breakaway. The rest of the first half was a real trench warfare. Laval kicker Boris Bede was particularly successful two punts inside the Carabins five yard line. The team conceded safeties after two possessions.

The Carabins will play their next match on Sunday at CEPSUM as the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (1-3) will visit in a rematch of last year’s RSEQΒ  semi-final. The match will start at 1:00pm.
