Rouge et Or to visit Dinos for Vanier Cup rematch

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will get a chance to redeem last year’s Vanier Cup on their way to the 2011 edition

The No. 2 Dinos (9-1) will host the top-ranked UniversitΓ© Laval Rouge et Or (10-1) in the national semi-final Mitchell Bowl Friday, Nov. 18 at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff goes at 7:30 p.m. MT (9:30 p.m. ET), live on TSN, RDS, and QR77 radio.

The Rouge et Or defeated the Dinos 29-2 in a snow globe-like PEPS Stadium in Quebec City in the 2010 Vanier Cup. Next Friday’s game will be the third in history between the Dinos and the Rouge et Or, all of them in the past four seasons. Laval also beat Calgary 59-10 in the 2008 Uteck Bowl, also in Quebec City.

The Dinos are hosting the Mitchell Bowl for the second straight season after winning their fourth straight Hardy Cup championship with a 62-13 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night, setting a school record for points in a playoff game and racking up more points in the Hardy Cup than any team in the history of the championship game.

For its part, Laval won its ninth consecutive Dunsmore Cup with a 30-7 win over the Montreal Carabins Saturday afternoon in Quebec City.

It is the fourth national semi-final game to be hosted at McMahon Stadium, all of them Dinos wins – the 2010 Mitchell Bowl (35-8 over Saint Mary’s), the 1995 Churchill Bowl (37-7 over Ottawa), and the 1985 Western Bowl (56-14 over Carleton). Canada West schools have won 13 consecutive Bowl games at home, dating back to 1973, and the Dinos are 16-2 lifetime at home in postseason games.

The other CIS semi-final, the Uteck Bowl, has Ontario champion McMaster taking on the Atlantic champion Acadia Axemen in Moncton, N.B. The winners will head to Vancouver for the 2011 Vanier Cup on Friday, Nov. 25 at B.C. Place Stadium.
