RSEQ football: Eight post-season scenarios in week 9

MONTREAL – Eight playoff scenarios exists heading into the final week of play in the 2010 Quebec University Football League (QUFL) season.

The Laval Rouge et Or have clinched first place with a perfect 8-0 mark, while the winless McGill Redmen are the only team in the circuit that cannot participate in the post-season tournament.
The Montréal Carabins are the only other team to have clinched a playoff berth and will finish either second or third in the conference. The Carabins, 5-3, are tied with the Bishop’s Gaiters (5-3) and will square off this Saturday in Montreal. Other teams in contention for the final two entries into the playoffs are the Sherbrooke Vert & Or and Concordia Stingers, who are presently tied in the standings with identical 4-4 records.

Games to watch
All three games this weekend will be played simultaneously at 1 pm ET with television coverage on Radio-Canada focusing on the Gaiters-Carabins clash at CEPSUM Stadium in Montreal. The Gaiters won the first meeting of the season 39-21 in the friendly confines of Coulter Field. In their last visit to CEPSUM, the team from Lennonxville was blitzed 40-15 by the Carabins in last year’s Dunsmore Cup semi-final. Bishop’s last win at CEPSUM came on September 22, 2007 when they defeated les Bleus 24-5. After having their five-game winning streak snapped, the Gaiters have dropped two in a row and have been outscored 111-11 by Laval and Sherbrooke. The Carabins lost 21-14 to Concordia last Friday night setting up this showdown for second place.

After posting back-to-back wins, the Sherbrooke Vert & Or host the McGill Redmen in their respective season-finales. The Vert & Or moved back into the CIS Top-10 this week after a convincing 49-11 over Bishop’s last Saturday. With their 38-point win, the Vert & Or earned the tie-breaker against their cross-town rivals, winning the season series on point differential. The Redmen, who are still without the services of their star quarterback Jonathan Collin, injured in the third quarter of the opening game of the campaign, are looking for their first win of the season.

The lone other game in the QUFL has the Concordia Stingers hosting the Laval Rouge et Or who are attempting to finish the regular season with an unblemished record for the third time in four years, and fifth time since they joined the league in 1996. The Quebec side has won each of the past 15 contests with the Stingers, going back to October 4, 2003 when Concordia downed Laval 38-30. The Rouge et Or won the first meeting of the campaign 46-10 at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City on October 3. Laval is ranked first in Canada in post-per-game averaging 43.6, while allowing just 6.4 against.
