RSEQ RECAP: Carabins gain sole possession of second place [stats]

Montreal, September 26, 2015 – The Montreal Carabins won the battle of turnovers against the Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon at Loyola Campus and earned a 41-29 win. Β The Carabins now have sole possession of 2nd place in the RSEQ standings.

The Stingers started a long offensive 100 yard drive that led to the first touchdown – a 22 yard pass from Trenton Miller to Jean-Guy Rimpel. However, the Carabins scored on an eight yards pass from Gabriel Cousineau to Philip Enchill.

The Carabins took the lead on a 17-yard field goal by Louis-Philippe Simoneau, but the Stingers responded with a touchdown on their next possession in the second quarter. Miller once again found Rimpel for a five yard score.

Cousineau continued to lead the Carabins offensive attack on the field, as an 85-yard ended with a nine-yard run by rookie Asnnel Robo for his first career touchdown. Maiko Zepeda then managed an interception on the Stingers next drive to give the ball back to the Carabins. This turnover led to the one-yard run by Sean Thomas Erlington for the major.

“We needed those turnovers,” said Zepeda who finished the game with 4.5 tackles. “We were not consistent in our execution and the defense took penalties that hurt the team and it was important to get those turnovers.”

“It’s always good to help our offense.”

The Stingers then managed another long drive of 85 yards, which led to the third touchdown pass by Miller. He connected with Daniel Skube for a nine yard major. At the very end of the exciting first half, Simoneau added a 28 yard field goal to make the score 27-21 in favor of the Carabins at halftime.

The defenses were more effective in the third quarter and no team added to the score. However, the Carabins took advantage of turnovers in the fourth quarter to add to their lead. Erlington scored.

“I think this game to help change the momentum, said MΓ©nard-BriΓ¨re. “I felt the energy on the bench.”

“This is a game we could not predict, but I saw that there was a possibility.”

The Stingers fumbled on the following Carabins kickoff and added another touchdown on a Gabriel Cousineau 1 yard touchdown sneak to take a 20-point lead.

“For me, the play of Felix Menard-BriΓ¨re was the key play of the game,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “We found a way to get a win and that’s what’s important.”

“We made adjustments before the second half, but it was mostly work on the mental aspect.”

Cousineau was almost perfect, having completed 16 pass attempts before throwing an interception in the third quarter. He finished his day with 245 yards by completing 24 passes in 28 attempts for an impressive 86 percent completion rate. His opponent Trenton Miller also did well. He managed 34 of his 48 pass attempts for 334 yards and four touchdowns. Concordia attack amassed 405 yards against 329 for the Carabins.

The Stingers added another touchdown late in the game and a two-point conversion was successful.

The Carabins will play their next game Saturday in Sherbrooke against the Vert & Or (2-2) for the second time this season. The Carabins won the first game by a score of 32-13 at CEPSUM. Kickoff is 4:00pm.
