RSEQ (recap): Ottawa’s Pierre breaks 35 year old record in win

Despite a late surge by the Stingers, the Rouge et Or football team kept its record intact Sunday afternoon at TELUS-Université Laval Stadium beating Concordia 42-27.
Laval (5-0) thus continues to lead the standings after five games in the RSEQ. The Carabins, the Vert & Or and the Redmen follow, all with a record of three wins and two losses.

Sunday’s game, played in front of 12,561 spectators, was marked by a record in Quebec University Football League with receiver Tyrone Pierre accumulated 311 yards through the air. The old mark of 305 yards was established by Gerald Prud’homme (Concordia) in 1980. The feat ranks 4th in CIS history.

“When go outside Quebec for recruitment, it is either for a particular need or for an exceptional player. I think Tyrone was one of the best receivers available in Canada last year,” complimented Laval head coach Glen Constantin about his record holder.

About the match itself, the coach was pleased with the victory, and the slowdown late in the game did not seem to bother him. “No disrespect to Concordia, we play several young in the fourth quarter. It’s important for us to give them experience. You must still give credit to the Stingers, they made things happen late in the game.

Tyrone Pierre fun

After a safety touch granted by Concordia and 26 yard field goal by Dominic Lévesque, Pierre caught a pass from Marc-Antoine Langevin and spun into the end zone, a play of 85 yards that gave a lead of 12-0 at Laval. The Stingers would reply by the end of the first quarter on a one-yard run from quarterback Trenton Miller. Laval was ahead 12-7 after 15 minutes.

Lévesque kicked a second field goal, then Maxime Boutin scored a touchdown on a pass play and a 21-yard run. Another two field goals of 22 and 36 yards before the end of the half, and Laval lead to 26-7 at the break.

Dominic Lévesque – him again! – There was two other FGs in the third quarter, his fourth and fifth of the match, distances of 26 and 12 yards. After the third, Laval was ahead 32-7.

Pierre continued to shine in the fourth, adding to his record. The receiver grabbed a pass from Richard Hugo, entered in relief of Marc-Antoine Langevin, for his second major of the game.

The Stingers managed to reduce the lead when Miller hit Yanic Lessard for a TD. It was then 39-14 for the R&O.

Miller completed another long game on the next possession when his TD pass to Gilbert-Knorren Jalhani, 39-21.

The visitors threatened again on their next series. Jean-Guy Rimpel carried the ball 10 yards for a touchdown, but the Stingers were missed the two-point conversion. It was then 39-27. Laval, however, assured of victory after the break with another 30 yards FG by Lévesque.

The Rouge et Or finished the game with 637 yards on offense, including 482 through the pass. Concordia hadl 437, including 400 by air.
