RSEQ RECAPS: Former #CFC100 Normandin scores 3 TD’s in Carabins victory [stats]

Montreal  – A total of 18 points in the first quarter by the Montreal Carabins allowed them to forge a lead they did not squander, en route to a 32-13 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or Saturday afternoon in front of 4762 spectators at CEPSUM.

Rookie receiver and #CFC100 CLASS 2015 Louis-Mathieu Normandin once again shined as he scored three touchdowns.

The Carabins opened the scoring on their second offensive drive. The Carabins scored when Gabriel Cousineau connected with Normandin for a 38 yard touchdown pass. This combination also worked in the fourth quarter as Normandin again scored on a  58 yard pass to seal the win. The rookie finished with 125 yards on five receptions.

“I love scoring here, I feel at home, I love the atmosphere,” said the number 88 receiver, who grew up a few blocks CEPSUM. “The offensive line and Gabriel played at the highest level.”

“Our line allowed Gabriel to take his time and he threw the ball well. We knew it would be a very physical game and he had to execute the game plan.”

Immediately after the first score, Félix Ménard-Brière followed with a long kickoff  to score a single point. Still in the first quarter, Louis Philippe Simoneau kicked a 30-yard field goal. On the next Vert & Or possession, Randy Lusikila managed to block the punt. The ball was then recovered in the end zone by Djonatan Buissereth for a touchdown. The Vert et Or previously recorded a single point on a failed field and it was 18-1 at the end of the first quarter.

“For us, turnovers in this game was huge because were able to convert them into points”, said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “I think our defense managed to establish itself physically today.”

“They were also very fast and covered a lot of ground.”

Sherbrooke kicker Mathieu Hébert added a 32 yard field goal to bring the score to 18-4 before halftime.

The Carabins started the second half strong. Antoine Fortin-Lefebvre recovered the kickoff to give the Cousineau and the Carabins offence the ball. The Carabins took the opportunity to add a touchdown. After a completed pass to Samuel Nadeau-Piuze and a breakaway, Normandin recovered the precious ball in the end zone.

The Vert et Or then tried to initiate a comeback cross the field following some offensive plays. At the goal line, running back Felix Marquis-Chevrier fumbled at the one yard line and it was recovered by Maiko Zepeda. The Vert et Or then conceded the safety to the Carabins. However on their next offensive series, the Vert et Or threatened as Oliver Edmond connected with Jeremi Roch for a 13 yard touchdown pass.

Cousineau completed 24 of 34 pass attempts for 299 passing yards. In addition to his touchdown passes, he threw three interceptions. His opponent Jérémi Roch managed 18 of 32 pass attempts for 261 passing yards. He also launched an interception into the hands of Maïko Zepeda.

“Our game plan worked beautifully”, said Carabins linebacker Alex Cromer-Émond, led the team with seven tackles. “We were able to put pressure on their quarterback.”

The Carabins got their second consecutive victory and improved their record to 2-1. They will play their  next Saturday at Concordia University against the Stingers (2-1). The game is scheduled at 2:00pm and will be presented live on TVA Sports.
