Saint John Wanderers rush all over Ottawa Invaders in senior exhibition game

The Maritime Football League’s (MFL) Saint John Wanderers hosted the Northern Football Conference’s Ottawa Invaders on the weekend in the teams first ever exhibition game with one another. The Invaders, a second year senior team with the Ontario NFC, and the Wanderers, in their 10th year of existence, played in a spirited affair at Canada Games Stadium in Saint John.

A last minute interception by Wanderers’ Bruce McMillan sealed the game for the home squad. The only touchdown of the game was scored in the first quarter by QB Jon Golacki on a sneak play. The Wanderers running back Jon Haines rushed for over 300 yards while Golacki threw for 75 yards on the rainy evening.

Defensive standouts for the Wanderers’ included linebacker A.J. Gallant, defensive end John Phillips and lineman Scott MacNamee each chipping in with a sack. Phillips also had three batted-down balls.

The Invaders open up their regular season May 28th when they host the Tri-City Outlaws. The Wanderers open that same day when they host the PEI Privateers.
