New chapter ahead

Edmonton standout joins CWUAA team’s 2014 class

David Sam has come a long way.

Leaving his native Nigeria in grade 6, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta. Since then, he has never looked back when it comes to his gridiron career.

Recently, his hard work and dedication has paid off.  The 5’8, 174 pound standout is one of the newest recruits to commit to the University of Alberta Golden Bears for the 2014 CWUAA season.

“I signed with the Golden Bears because I wanted to part of something on the rise to great things,” discussed Sam of his decision.  “After talking to Coach (Chris) Morris and seeing all the work he has put into this program to rebuild and how he emphasis on not just the football aspect, but also the importance of academics and family.”

“Plus there’s nothing like getting to play at home in front of family and friends.”

Sam joins the Golden Bears after completing his high school career with Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA).  This past season, he racked up 740 rushing yards on 101 carries.  The Alberta standout began his career with the St. Albert Fury.

With his commitment, he will be reunited with Thunderbirds teammate, Levon Hawreliak who recently committed to the team. While Sam has played at the running back position throughout his career, he will be trying out a new position with the Golden Bears.

“I’ve always played running back but I’m excited and looking into playing defensive back at the University of Alberta,” said Sam.
