SASK HIGH SCHOOL RECAP (7): Mbasela scores 3 TD’s in CFC#5 Golden Suns win, Wagg guides CFC#16 Tartans, Colts & Cyclones advance to Moose Jaw semis

Another week of action is in the books in the high school football season in Saskatchewan.

Here is a glimpse of some of the games that took place in Regina and Moose Jaw.

REGINA INTERCOLLEGIATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE (RIFL):

SCHWANN CONFERENCE (4A):

CFC#5 LEBOLDUS GOLDEN SUNS 62, WINSTON KNOLL WOLVERINES 0:

Semba Mbasela scored three touchdowns and rushed for 272 yards on 23 carries as CFC#6 LeBoldus Golden Suns crushed Winston Knoll Wolverines 62-0.

Nick Cross, Josh Donnelly, Finley Easton as well as Dom and #CFC100 Nicholas Dheilly each tallied a major in the win.

While discipline still remained an issue for the team, one area the team was successful in was turnovers. The Golden Suns racked up seven while only giving away one to the Wolverines.

“Key to the victory was winning the battle in the trenches,” commented Golden Suns Head Coach John Foord after the game.  “The entire team impressed on this night as all players contributed in a meaningful way and all three phases of the game were very strong.”

“The team was led by Nick Cross and [#CFC100] Nick Dheilly on defence, Terrell Mldenberger and Findley Easton on Special Teams, and Semba Mbasela and the offensive line on Offense.”

The Suns will await their semi-final opponent as they have earned a first round bye in the RIFL 4A Schwann Conference playoffs.

CFC#16 CAMPBELL TARTANS 64, BALFOUR BEARS 0:

Brayden Wagg completed 12 passes in 22 attempts for 208 passing yards, 36 rushing yards, six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) and an interception as CFC#16 Campbell Tartans dismantled Balfour Bears 64-0.

Kellen Henry added two majors had 23 yards on two receptions.  Yianni Maragos scored a touchdown and rushed for 98 yards on eight carries.  Additionally, Keydon Selinger tallied a major and had 19 rushing yards on two carries.

Miguel Kukura added a score and racked up 98 yards on four receptions.  Bennett Stusek tallied a major and had 36 yards on three receptions for the Tartans.

On defence, Kyler Flahr, Carter Stusek and Avery Tiefenbach led the team in tackles.  Chris Blackett caught an interception and converted it into a touchdown and converted it into a touchdown.  Kane Knauss also had an interception while Josh Hagerty had a blocked punt in the win.

“We were happy to finish the regular season with a focused performance by our team and to get just about all of our players quality playing time,” said Tartans Head Coach Ryan Hall.  “We will continue to work on making necessary improvements in execution and effort as we head into the playoffs against Thom this week.”

The Tartans will battle the Thom Trojans in the RIFL 4A Schwann Conference quarterfinals on Friday.

MOOSE JAW HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (MJHSFL):

SWIFT CURRENT COLTS 33, VANIER VIKINGS 20:

Tristan Lockman tallied three majors and rushed for 280 yards on 38 carries as Swift Current Colts advanced to the Moose Jaw High School Football League (MJHSFL) semi-finals with a 33-20 win over Vanier Vikings.

Kelton Kouri scored three touchdowns and rushed for 303 yards on 21 carries for the Vikings in the quarterfinal.

At halftime, the Colts enjoyed a 27-7 lead over the Vikings and never looked back.

The Colts will battle defending champions Peacock Tornadoes in Saturday’s semi-final.

CENTRAL CYCLONES 48, ESTEVAN ELECS 30:

Ryan Reidy had two one yard touchdown scores as Central Cyclones got by the Estevan Elecs 48-30 in quarterfinal action.

Abu Dukuly caught an interception and ran it downfield for a 59 yard major.  Aidan Coleman, Zach Hagerman, Jordan Branning and Bryton Slater each added a score for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones will face the Yorkton Raiders in the semi-final on Saturday.

As for the Elecs, Donny Mortenson scored two touchdowns and amassed 177 yards on 10 receptions. Jacob Shurygalo recovered a fumble and took it into the end zone for a 38 yard major.  Additionally, Keaton Tarnes added a score in the loss.
