Saskatoon Valkyries capture 4th women’s championship in a row

SASKATOON – For the fourth consecutive year, the Saskatoon Valkyries captured the western women’s Canadian football league (WWCFL) championship.

It was the third year in a row the Valkyries trounced the Lethbridge Steel in the final. Β Β The Valkyries have won every championship since the league started up in 2011.

On Saturday night, Saskatoon shut out Lethbridge 53-0 at Griffiths Stadium. Β Valkyries QBΒ Candace Bloomquist threw for 341 yards on 21 of 30 completions (season stats 65 for 113 (58 per cent) for 1,073 yards with 12 TDs and one interception). Β Julie David was the leading rusher with 140 yards (also had 62 yard punt return TD).

The Valkyries defeated the Regina Riot last month in the prairie conference final to advance to the championship.

The Riot were the first and still the only team to defeat Saskatoon.
