Scott Brady Named Football Mounties’ New Defensive Coordinator

SACKVILLE, NB – Sparked by some standout offensive stars and a really stingy defense, the 2010 Football Mounties β€œturned the corner” in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) last season, hosting the playoffs for a first time since 1998.

The team looks to carry on from where they left off in 2010, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Last year’s defensive backs and special teams coach Scott Brady is hoping to repeat or build upon the Mounties’ aggressive defensive style. The Mounties are pleased to announce that Coach Brady will take over as the team’s Defensive Coordinator for the 2011 season.

Brady takes over from Scott Annand, who has returned to teaching after he had been seconded last year from the Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro, NS to handle the defensive coordinator’s duties for the Mounties. Brady, a Sackville, NB resident, will take the reins and provide continuity to a developing and strong defensive unit β€” a group that gave up 152 fewer points than the previous year, that boasted four of the top 12 conference tacklers, and that finished second in rushing defence.

As defensive backs and special teams coach last year, Brady worked with three conference all-stars and a first-team All-Canadian and helped to develop very successful special teams that often made a big difference in games. Head coach Kelly Jeffrey acknowledges Brady’s ability saying, β€œScott had the opportunity to coordinate our special teams this past season and was a big part of our success. Throughout the season our kicking game was the most consistent unit on the field and I think that was a direct reflection of Scott working with that group on a daily basis.”

Originally from Vancouver, BC, Brady was a football MVP from Ontario with the Iroquois Ridge High School team and the Halton Invictas squad in Oakville. A former running back, wide receiver, kick and punt returner, he played four seasons and was a three-year starter with the Mounties before injuries somewhat sidelined him. In his last year he pursued coaching seriously, and it was always something that he wanted to do.

β€œI ended my playing years early because I always knew that I wanted to coach football and it felt like the right time to begin my coaching career,” says Brady. β€œI felt like Coach Jeffrey was someone from whom I could learn a lot, and the opportunity to work with him was just too good to pass up. There is no greater opportunity than to coach football at the #1 university in Canada where we are fully committed to building a championship program.”

Head coach Kelly Jeffrey is happy to have Brady in his coaching ranks and says, β€œI have had the opportunity to work with Scott for the past five years and have been able to see first hand his incredible work ethic and his desire to improve as a coach. Scott has always displayed tremendous football knowledge beyond his years and is an excellent coach. He’s also been a tireless recruiter for us, and continues to bring in quality student-athletes. He has a very good sense of what we are about as a program and what it takes for a defense to be successful.”
