The Department of Athletics, Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Regular Full-time Head Football
Coach.
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The University of Calgary Dinos football team is among the nation’s most successful university sport
programs. Winners of four Vanier Cup titles in their 50-year history, the Dinos have captured six Canada
West championships in seven years and are consistently among the best programs in the nation in
developing student-athletes into outstanding leaders and professional football players.
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Coach, Dinos Football is responsible for developing
nationally competitive football student-athletes while providing outstanding leadership of the varsity
football program through the coaching, recruitment/retention, and public relations duties required in
organizing a competitive and successful team. Fund development and promoting academic success for the
student-athletes under your supervision are also critical components of this role.
You will be in support of and act in accordance with the strategic direction of the Athletic Department, the
Faculty of Kinesiology, and the University of Calgary as they relate to fundraising, general promotion,
budget management, and appropriate administrative responsibilities. The position requires that you have
values consistent with the high standards of the University of Calgary and have a desire to produce a
program that competes with the very best teams in the nation. In addition, the head coach will ensure
compliance with Canada West and Canadian Interuniversity sport rules and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERTISE REQUIRED
ο‚· A minimum of five years’ coaching experience in football, preferably at the college, university, junior,
professional, or national team level
ο‚· Knowledge of and commitment to high-performance team building and player development
ο‚· Minimum bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, or related field; Master’s degree
preferred
ο‚· Strong communications, administration, and budget management skills required
ο‚· Knowledge of electronic communication systems and MS Office Suite an asset.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/TASKS AND DUTIES
Program Development & Coaching
ο‚· Player and team development: develop highly successful players. Plan and deliver year-round skill
and physical development plans
ο‚· Technical ability: ensure that players are effectively performing techniques and in such a way that
they are among the very best in CIS. Annual improvement should occur.
ο‚· Tactical ability: As it relates to playing systems, ensure that the team takes advantage of its strengths
and is prepared for competition.ο‚· Team building: Direct your team to a common and cohesive goal and develop a team culture that
fuels success in the classroom and on the field of play.
Recruiting
Recruit and secure commitments from talented student-athletes. These individuals should improve team
performance and culture each year. Maintain an active and strategic recruiting plan.
Academic Success
At all times, promote the academic success of student-athletes.
Sport Science & Medicine
Provide services (strength and conditioning, sport psychology, etc.) that are complementary to the
university’s varsity sports medicine team (athletic therapists, physicians, nutritionists, and other medical
support personnel) and produce excellent performance results. Sport science and medicine progress
should be measured and reported annually.
Administration
Effectively execute all required administrative duties in a timely fashion, in line with university processes
and schedules:
ο‚· Compliance: Comply and work with all university, Canada West, and CIS playing and award
regulations. Adhere to department policies, procedures, and timelines.
ο‚· Budget: Create and manage yearly budget, with regular reporting as required. The head coach is
accountable for the team budget.
ο‚· Planning: Create a full seasonal plan (individual and team), taking into consideration all aspects of
conditioning, technical, tactical, conference/non-conference and postseason competition, and
academic requirements/commitments.
ο‚· Human Resources: Effectively manage MaPS and part-time employees and contractors according to
university regulations and timelines, and ensure that football employees are empowered to perform
to their potential.
Promotion and Fundraising
ο‚· Community engagement: Commit to and engage with team and department community engagement
initiatives, including working with alumni groups
ο‚· University engagement: Promote positive and collaborative relations within the University of Calgary
ο‚· Fund development: Raise and effectively manage the established annual target, working with the
Athletics development team
ο‚· Fifth Quarter Association: Work effectively with the Fifth Quarter, a group of football alumni
committed to football and academic excellence that raises money in support of Dinos Football. The
head coach must work effectively with the club president and will contribute to an effective
partnership between the Fifth Quarter and the University of Calgary.

development, making use of university opportunities and individually-customized experiences.
